Mayville, Earl
Earl Henry John Mayville
Passed away peacefully in Napanee Ontario on May 26th, 2024 with his daughters at his side.
Earl was the father of the “Mayville Girls” (Karen (Brian St. John), Janet (Mitch Fortin) and Leslie (Jason Peterson).
He was affectionately known as “Grumpy” to Cassandra (Pat), Brandon (Jamie), Andrea (Robert), Chloe, Lydia, Veronica,
Keefe, Jian and Kayvon and Great Grumpy to Victoria, Bellamy, Quinn and Chase.
It is very difficult to capture the essence of a man who was so complex but yet so basic in his needs.
First and foremost, he was a Dad and he loved his daughters to the moon and back. Even though he would tell us that
“Gertrude” was his favourite daughter, the three us knew that he was so proud of us. We were regularly told that whenever he spoke about us, he glowed. He was also so pleased with our choices in his sons-in-law, always referring to them as “good men”.
Our Dad travelled around the world having joined the Canadian Navy at seventeen. He did so again later in his career after being awarded a free trip around the world on a military test flight as compensation for good performance. Post his retirement from the Canadian Forces, he was an agent and then manager for Century 21, a grounds keeper, a taxi driver, a commissionaire with the Corps
and a school bus driver. Dad was a jack of all trades, master of none, but aware of the need to support his family.
Even though Dad did not complete High School, he had a solid grasp of the English language, instilling a broad understanding of
words in our youth. As young children he told us that the next time someone bullied one of us on the playground instead of
using our fists we should use words. After his retirement Dad took English courses at Queen’s University.
He was not a man of many words but when he did speak, his words had impact.
For anyone who knew our Dad, they knew that he was sarcastic to a fault. Even though occasionally his sarcasm stung,
it wasn’t meant to, he was just awkwardly and affectionately trying to be funny. He had a quirky sense of humour and you
would know a zinger was coming when he’d get a twinkle in his eye and a smirk on his face. Then he would spend the next several minutes thinking about his delivery. Dad was a strong competitor in poker, darts and dice and he was someone who still believed
that he had a chance of winning publishers clearing house and that Ed McMahon would come to his door delivering a big cheque.
People may have said he was short, but he believed that the sidewalk was just built too close to his butt.
Dad’s passing is not a loss as he continues to live in our hearts and we have a million wonderful memories of him.
All we have to do is start sharing some of his stories with extended family and friends, and the room is full of raucous laughter.
Our hearts are full and we are grateful that our Dad has been reunited with his Mom and Dad and his brother and sister;
they are all playing dice right now.
Cremation has taken place. A Service will be held on Friday, June 14th at 3:00pm
at the Ainsworth Funeral Home, 288 Noxon Avenue, Wellington, ON.
As expressions of sympathy, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Heart and Stroke Foundation
or the Canadian Cancer Society as Dad regularly contributed to both of these worthy causes.
