Obituary
MAYNARD H. BAUMAN
1933-2023
There comes a time when a long earthly life comes to completion, like the finishing of a finely turned wooden bowl from a burl. Maynard Bauman, a long-time resident of St. Jacobs, died peacefully and surrounded by his family on February 4, 2023. He celebrated his 90th birthday one week earlier at Freeport Hospice in Kitchener, where he received exceptional care for the last month. Maynard was a hard-working, kind-hearted and generous man, quietly helping wherever needed. In 90 years, Maynard developed many valued friendships, but his best friend (next to Ruth) always was his workshop.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his family: His beloved wife of almost 68 years, Ruth (Martin) Bauman; his children, grands and greats: Mark & Sharon Bauman (Dave & Crystal Bauman, Grayson, Sage; Mike & Alli Bauman, Georgia, Macie); Beth & Virgil Martin (Ben Martin & Jordyn Bogetti); Marcia & Larry Shantz (Julie & Marcus Wagler, Caleb; Dave & Melanie Shantz, Kailey, Lucas); his siblings and in-laws: Mel & Carol Bauman, Reta & Bert Martin, Bob Sarkisian, and Ray & Kathy Bauman; Roy & Lorraine Bauman (Ruth’s sister); and by many relatives and friends. Predeceased by his parents Addison S. & Annie W. (Horst) Bauman, sister Dorothy Sarkisian (d.2020), and nephew Chris Sarkisian (d.2005); and parents-in-law Enoch B. & Lizzie (Elizabeth Brubacher) Martin.
Maynard was deeply connected to the village of St. Jacobs. He worked for his parents at Bauman’s Red & White Food Stores, then Hollinger Hardware, followed by Home Hardware Stores Limited from its inception (mid-1960’s) until his retirement after 36 years there. He was a volunteer firefighter with the St. Jacobs Fire Department until work-related travel increased. He was an active member of St. Jacobs Mennonite Church. In his retirement, he became widely known for his artistic woodturnings. He was a long-serving volunteer with Habitat for Humanity’s Waterloo ReStore salvage crew, then later with Reapers of Hope Food Drying Program in Moorefield, and many other places that benefitted from his handiness and know-how. In November 2022, he and Ruth moved to Parkwood Seniors Community in Waterloo.
Arrangements entrusted to Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira. At Maynard’s request, cremation has taken place. There will not be a separate visitation date. A committal service will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at 1 p.m. at St. Jacobs Mennonite Cemetery, 2043 Three Bridges Road, St. Jacobs, followed by a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. at St. Jacobs Mennonite Church, 1310 King Street North, St. Jacobs with pastors Kevin Derksen and Mark Diller Harder officiating. The service will be livestreamed and can be accessed on Maynard’s tribute page of the funeral home website or on sjmc.on.ca. All are welcome to attend either or both services. As requested by the family, masks are mandatory. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Habitat for Humanity – Waterloo Region or *Beyond Housing (for Sprucelawn expansion in St. Jacobs; formerly *MennoHomes) would be appreciated at the church or on the funeral home website. The family sincerely thanks all health care professionals and staff for your dedication and compassion. We also thank Parkwood for their support. “When life starts slipping away, slip away with it.” (Ruth K. Bauman, December 31/22).
