May was the youngest daughter of William Tanner and Nell Tanner (White), born on January 31st, 1927.
She was predeceased by brothers Lloyd, Leonard, Dennis, and Arthur (Frank) sisters Winnifred (Winn) Siggery and Leslie, Dorothy (Dolly)Fred Packer and Alice (Kitty) Tom Shell (Hampshire UK)
May is survived by loving niece Maureen Hill (Gerry) of Fleet Hampshire UK, and their children Laura Bevin (Andrew), Kevin and Adam. Also loving niece Janet Leslie of Aldershot Hampshire UK.
May grew up in the military town of Aldershot England during the Second World War. It is here that she met a young Canadian by the name of Dwain Collison, who was training infantry men. She married Dwain on Septeber 30th 1945. May was one of the 48,000 war brides who were provided passage by ship to Canada in 1946.
Following the war, Dwain was an employee of INCO so he had settled in Sudbury. It was here that he moved into a small apartment at 285 Eyre that he had furnished and decorated for the arrival of his new bride. Both Glory and Jim were born in Sudbury in the years that followed. The family then moved to Lively in 1951 and finally to Patricia St. in Waters Township (aka Mikkola subdivion) in 1964.
May was very active in the Lively Trinity United Church and UCW. She was a skilled knitter and an avid baker and contributed many knitted creations and baked goods to numerous church sponsored events.
May was an avid reader and was a member of the Lively/Waters Friends of the Library and sat as a board member for many years.
During the 50s, 60s, and 70s May and Dwain were devoted square dancers. They travelled in Canada and the US to attend square dancing conventions. During this era they instructed new dancers (young and old) in schools and halls, throughout the Sudbury region where they formed wonderful friendships.
May loved to dance, but she also loved to travel, and did so until she was 92. She travelled throughout Canada, the US, UK, and Europe with Dwain, her daughter Glory and son in law Dueane, niece Maureen and Gerry, nephew David, and Jim and Linda in her later years. We have shared great memories with May in Florida, England, Scotland, Ireland, Holland, France, Cyprus, Hungary, and many trips to beautiful British Columbia.
May was a proud member of the Canadian War Brides Association and served on the Sudbury executive for several years. In 2002 when she was president of the local chapter, she was integral in organizing the National Convention for the War Brides Association, hosted in Sudbury. She was thrilled by the fact, that our Governor General Adrienne Clarkson, and her husband John Ralston Saul, accepted an invitation to this event as guest speakers.
May had strong religious beliefs, which was definitely supported by the 10 bibles (various versions) and hymnals she kept at her bedside. She was known to be a kind and gentle lady who will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
At this time, the family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the staff at Maison McColloch Hospice for the exceptional care May received in her final days with us. We are extremely grateful that she was able to experience such genuine compassionate care in this wonderful facility, during the most difficult time of her life. We also would like to express our thanks and appreciation to May’s PSW, Tammy from Bayshore, who brought joy and a “ray of sunshine” into our home twice weekly, for the past 4 years.
Resting at the Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home, 233 Larch Street, Sudbury (Friends may call 11:30am Monday, May 15, 2023). Funeral Service in the R.J. Barnard Chapel, Monday, May 15, 2023 at 2pm. Cremation with interment in the family plot at Water Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Maison McCulloch Hospice would be appreciated.
