It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye, yet celebrate the life of the most wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother, family matriarch and friend, Maxine Ellen Ann Stewart (Collier) who passed away peacefully on March 8, 2023 at the Cumberland Regional Hospital Nappan, N.S. surrounded by her family, she was 87. Maxine grew up on the south shore of Nova Scotia in Shad Bay, the daughter of the late James and Emma (Yeadon) Collier. She and her husband of 55 years, the late Laurie Douglas Stewart, had six children, Connie, Claire (Mike), Rosalind (Dwight), Kathy (Alex), Phillip and Patty (Tom). She had ten grandchildren and nine great- grandchildren. Her eight siblings also call Nova Scotia home, they are Pearl, Johnny, Rene, Irma, Ruby, Mable, Olive (Ollie), and Beverly (Bev). Maxine has always been the most loveable, fun loving, outgoing, and creative person you would ever wish to meet. Her wit and recollections were as sharp as nails, especially when it came to family history and events. She was the hub of all family activity, a gathering spot for meals, laughter, and growth, ensuring family members at all levels stayed close and knew each other well. If you knew Max, you loved her, she was always a friend to all. She lived mostly off the land near the lake in Victoria that she called home for so many years, gardening, raising a variety of animals, and spending time helping out in the green houses around the property. It is said she had the ultimate green thumb. Though her home was her sanctuary, she was known to travel abroad with family and friends, taking in the many gardens that different parts of the world had to offer. (Her favorite was The Butchart Gardens in British Columbia). She was also a fan of quilting, which garnered more than one ribbon at county fairs held in Oxford, she also enjoyed «Shuffling» and crafts of any kind. She loved to sit and chat with family and friends over a cup of tea, constantly flashing that broad smile while recanting stories from several decades. With her sharp wit intact until the very end, she would often say goodbye adding «nice knowing you, now go fly a kite» (she meant it literally)! You can bet there will be a kite or two gracing the skies over the lake in her memory. (Special thanks must be given for the support and guidance of the health care professionals involved in Max’s care during her final weeks, it is truly appreciated.) A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 5 from 1:30 – 3 p.m. in Oxford Fire Hall, 115 Waverly Street, Oxford.
