Mavis’ Obituary
It is with gratitude for such a loving mother that we announce that Mavis Pearl Gamble, long time resident of Peace River, Alberta, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2023 surrounded by her family at Sutherland Place in Peace River at the age of 87 years.
Mom was the youngest child born to Walter and Margaret Burchett, on September 7, 1935 in Tawatinaw, Alberta. Her early years were spent on the farm, first at Tawatinaw and later at Jarvie. Shortly after starting school, the family moved to Westlock where she lived until graduating from High School. She developed lifelong friendships in Westlock, with both Elenor (Heise) Stannard and June (Wikner) Skip. High school was where she also became an avid curler. She is one of the lucky few to have collected an eight-ender pin with her team in Peace River- a feat that she was quite proud of.
It was while attending a dance in Clyde that she met a rather dashing fellow named John Gamble from Ontario. This chance meeting started a romance that lasted very close to 70 years. John and Mavis were married September 3, 1955 and started their lives together in Edmonton, where they had the first two of four children, Glen and Gail. In 1965, the family moved to Peace River. Dad came first and Mom followed by passenger train with the kids and all our belongings in a box car. Peace River was where they remained for the next 57 years (except for a four-year stint in McLennan in the early eighties). Blair and Brent arrived in the first few years of living in Peace River to complete the family.
Mom, as you can imagine, was very busy running after 4 kids who were into every sport and activity available. And, of course, when your children are part of community events, parents are as well. Mom held many positions on the figure skating executive over the years, miles and miles of driving were put on back and forth to the arena and test days. Sleepless nights ensuring that skating costumes were completed in time for the annual carnival or competitions held throughout the season were also a regular occurrence. She was also very active in hockey circles, baseball, and track and field. She was always one of the loudest cheerleaders from the stands!
Mom also gave her talents over the years to St. Paul’s United Church which they proudly called their spiritual home for most of their years in Peace River. She was involved with the board in different capacities, taught Sunday School, baked and sewed for many a church tea and bake sale and contributed to most spring and fall suppers. For many years she was also one of the hostesses for the Thursday Morning Community Coffee Party at the church.
Summers were filled with family visits to Westlock, camping trips to the mountains, the stampede, Gull Lake, and of course to hockey and figure skating camps. Lots of fun and adventures with four kids and a dog piled in the back seat!
In the late 70s Mom re-entered the workforce outside the home working part time at the Imperial Oil bulk station in Peace River. When they moved to McLennan, mom went back to school to obtain her business administration certificate and worked at the town office in McLennan until they moved back to PR in 1986, where after a time, she started working for the Town of Peace River in their municipal office. She stayed with the town office until her retirement at age 65.
With an empty nest and a bit more time on their hands, Mom and Dad enjoyed travelling together to England, the East Coast, Hawaii and a Caribbean cruise. Smaller road trips to watch their grandchildren in hockey, barrel racing, swimming etc. were also a must. Mom had a special relationship with each and every grandchild and she loved them with all her heart. She attended as many of their activities as distance allowed. As health challenges became more frequent Moms travelling was restricted to medical appointments, but her interest in her family’s activities never waned. She always wanted to be kept abreast of who was doing what.
Mom was predeceased by her father Walter, mother Margaret, Step-Mother Inga, Sisters Dorothy and Joyce, half-sister Iris and brothers, Norman and Harry. She is survived by sister-in-law Leah Burchett, children Glen (Diane), Gail (Rod), Blair (Shelley), and Brent (Tanis), Grandchildren Kelsey (Dexter), Denika, Braden (Lisa), Taylor, Steven (Samantha), Olivia, Amanda and Cohen, great grandchildren Phoenix and Miller, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
We wish to express our thanks to the nurses and staff at Sutherland Place and to Dr. Mochinski for their care of mom over this past year.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute and the Canadian Cancer Society.
A celebration of life for both John and Mavis Gamble will be held Saturday July 29, 2023, 1:00pm at the Hazel Bluff Hall near Westlock.
