It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother after her courageous battle with cancer.
Mavis is survived by her two daughters, Janice (Peter) and Leslie and her son Stephen, as well as by her partner of over 40 years, Roger Dougherty. Also, she leaves behind her grandchildren Lindsay, Michael and Ingrid (Ebe) as well as her great grand-daughters Jasper and Kaylie.
Mavis will also be greatly missed by Roger’s children Doug (Sandra), Bruce (Cynthia), Brent (Sherri), and Dianne (Keith), as well as by her nieces (Ann and Kathy), cousins (Christine and Rick), neighbors, and many good friends.
Mavis was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and lived her early years as a young girl in the small, friendly and thriving town of Govan, near Last Mountain Lake, Saskatchewan, where the family often visited for summer fun.
Mavis was the youngest family member, having 3 sisters Marjorie, Edna, Norma and her brother Douglas.
After retirement in 1995, Mavis and Roger traveled extensively throughout Canada and the United States with their RV. They made many good friends along the way, playing bridge, camping and enjoying life.
Arizona was a favorite destination during the winter months and we are grateful that Mavis experienced these opportunities.
Mom really loved her daily swims in the pool, enjoying life with Roger and playing bridge with friends at their winter oasis in Yuma.
Mavis was a very compassionate, kind, generous and loving person who always looked for qualities of goodness in everyone. She was the best mother and friend who always made sure that we had everything we needed, caring for us and giving her ever-lasting, unconditional love.
In addition to being a loving partner, companion, mother, friend and neighbor, Mavis was a patriotic Canadian and very proud Albertan.
She was an avid reader of current events and various thriller novels and enjoyed movies (especially older ones featuring her favorite actors like Clint Eastwood and actress Audrey Hepburn).
Mom always took great joy and appreciation in antiques, flowers, and driving her car. Her cooking and baking skills were fantastic, providing the family with many great delicious meals, treats and special-occasion dinners.
Mavis loved nature, dogs, children and her town of Sherwood Park. Her favorite bird, appropriately, was the polite, cute and friendly chickadee.
However difficult our loss is, we take comfort in knowing that Mom is now with our Heavenly Father.
Special thanks go to her caregivers, and especially to her nurse, Peyton, who epitomizes the definition of professionalism and compassion.
As requested by Mavis, there will be no formal service. A celebration of life will be held at a date and location to be determined.
Any contributions or donations can be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation or to Canadian Blood Services.
