In Celebration of
Mavis Arlene Markham
May 13, 1933 –
July 29, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Mavis Arlene Markham (nee Strang), a much-beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, in her 92nd year, on Monday, July 29, 2024, after a life well-lived.
She will be remembered with deep love and gratitude by her husband of 72 years, Donald Charles Markham, and her children Tyler, Terry “Missy” (Domenic), Doug (Sheryl), and Polliann (Sean). Mavis was blessed with 9 grandchildren – Elizabeth (Michael), Sarah (predeceased), Nicole (Brad), Casey (predeceased), Clayton (Amber), Connor and Mitch (Nicole), Spencer (Ian) and Hana. She was the proud great-grandmother of Kristopher, Abigail, Rachael, Madison and Derek. She will be missed by all, including her many nieces and nephews.
Mavis was born and raised in Comber, a small town in Southwestern Ontario. Throughout our lives, she shared with us her fond memories of growing up the youngest of 8 children. She loved living on the farm, where she learned the value of hard work, picking tomatoes from a young age. She married Don when she was 18 years old, and their life of love, laughter and adventure began. They moved a lot, living in Calgary, Stony Point, Shakespeare, St. Paul’s, and St. Mary’s, finally making Hamilton their home in 1973. Mavis had been a Tupperware Manager for many years, and when they were offered a distributorship in Hamilton, they packed up and moved their young family to the city, setting up Sunshine Sales Tupperware. Mavis could sell anything to anyone, she was a natural. In 1981, she moved to Tupperware’s Canadian head office, becoming a national sales consultant, with a move back to distributing when she and Don set up Aim-High Sales in 1989. They both retired from Tupperware in February of 1991, but they did not sit back and rest on their laurels. Mavis continued working at Lewiscraft, taking up knitting and crafting, and in 1995, she and Don became apartment building managers until 2010 when they finally retired and happily spent their time with their ever-growing family.
Mavis now rests at peace with her beloved parents, Harold and Ruth Strang, her 7 siblings, Minnie, Verna, Dorothy, Murray, Douglas, Shirley and Carmen, and their spouses. It is especially comforting to know that she is now reunited with her two beautiful and deeply loved granddaughters, Sarah (1982-1987) and Casey (1987-2009).
Our mom was full of fun and sunshine, and she loved her family with all of her heart. We are grateful to have so many fond memories that we will cherish forever. Mom, we love you a bushel and a peck, and a hug around the neck.
