Obituary
Maureen passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2023 at the Rock Lake Health District after a lengthy, but courageous battle with numerous health conditions. She was so fortunate to have her husband, Wayne beside her to support and look after her throughout this entire time.
She is survived by her husband Wayne, daughter Cheryl (Gerry Dousselaere) and son Curtis (Tracy) and Grandchildren Stephanie (Gilles Poirier), Alyssa (Jeremie Grenier) and Garet, Gradyn and Granton Ramage. Sister Janice Palmer, Sister-in-law Arlene Baillie, brothers and sisters in law Garry and Deanne Ramage and Daryl and Marian Ramage as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her mother and step dad Louise and Gerry Bilton, her father Allan Baillie, mother and father-in-law Gwen and Raymond Ramage and brother Ron Baillie.
Maureen was born on January 16, 1947 in Flin Flon, Manitoba. She along with her mother, brother and sister lived in a few communities in Manitoba before settling in Hamiota. She often spoke of her time with her mother, who raised her family as a single mother, while still teaching, which at the time was not common. She had many fond memories and stories of being in Hamiota and Oak Lake with her Grandma and Grandpa McBain and her Aunts, Uncles and cousins.
She graduated from Hamiota Collegiate in 1964. She was proud to be a member of the Hamiota Collegiate Girls Basketball team who won the Provincial title in 1964. This was quite a feat at the time, as back then this was against the entire province, including city teams.
After graduating from High School, she went to Winnipeg where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree. Later she received her Bachelor of Education from Brandon and her Resource Certificate.
Her first teaching position was in Treherne, where she was close to the same age as some of her students! It was there that she met Wayne, and the rest is history. They were married on December 21,1968 in Hartney. In the fall of 1969, they moved to Birtle, where their daughter Cheryl was born in 1972. In 1973 the family moved to Baldur where Wayne worked for a year with his Dad in the John Deere Shop.
In 1974 they moved to Cartwright, where they have lived ever since. In 1976, their son Curtis was born. Maureen worked in the schools for many years, starting with High School in Cartwright and then moved to Baldur School where she taught kindergarten for several years. She received her Resource Certificate and worked for several schools in Prairie Spirit School Division (formerly Pembina Valley School Division). She was very dedicated to her job, and worked hard to do the best for every student.
While their family was young, they enjoyed camping and spent many weekends camping with friends at Spruce Woods Park and across Manitoba and eventually had a seasonal site at Pleasant Valley before purchasing their cottage at Pleasant Valley from Wayne’s parents. They have made many friends, and enjoyed many happy hours over the years with their Pleasant Valley friends!
They spent time during their summer vacation camping. A few memorable trips include one to Disneyland in the mid-1970s with Bob and Sylvia Marshall; a trip to the Black Hills with Jimmy and Gloria Kinley and family; trips to Minneapolis to watch some ball games; and a 6 week trip to Disneyland, during which they had stops in Calgary, Las Vegas, and the Grand Canyon. During the winter, the kids remember annual trips to the Colonial Inn with several other local families.
In their retirement years, they spent many enjoyable years traveling to Los Aylas, Mexico where they have met many lifelong friends from across Canada, and Mexico. Maureen made several trips to Nova Scotia to visit her brother and sister-in-law Ron and Arlene. She was very happy to take separate trips with each of her granddaughters to Nova Scotia to visit Uncle Ron and Aunt Arlene. In September of 2015 she was fortunate to travel to Europe with her good friend Harvene on a yoga retreat!
A public graveside service will be held at the Cartwright Cemetery on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 2:00pm with Rev. Lawrence Smith officiating. Following the service, a luncheon will take place in the Cartwright Community Hall. Everyone is welcome.
In Maureen’s memory, if one wishes, donations may be made to Cartwright and Area Foundation, (with Cartwright Community Independent School designated in the donation), Box 249, Cartwright, MB R0K 0L0.
