MAUNO S. IMMONEN
January 25/1941 – August 9/2024
Born to Antti & Elsa Immonen in Helsinki, Finland (and big brother to Marja Adamcryck (John) of Brockville, ON), after a long struggle with dementia, Mauno died peacefully on Friday, August 9, 2024, with his loving wife, Judy, (nee Whelpley) holding his hand. Married for over 61 years, Mauno was the proud and loved Dad to Wayne (Kris) of Calgary, AB and Stuart (Kathryn) of Victoria, BC. Also, a proud and cherished Grandpa of Connor (Krisi) Immonen & Marina and Chloe Immonen. The family moved to Canada in 1951 and Mauno eventually became a Canadian citizen, but he never lost his love for his beloved homeland.
With no ESL at that time, he taught himself English using the Eaton’s Catalogue. Mauno was a scholar, an athlete, a builder and artist of all things wood who would tackle all challenges & solve all problems. Building a cottage on Lake WahWashKesh gave us over 50 years of wonderful memories and was truly where he was happiest. Graduating from the University of Waterloo in 1965 with an Honours degree in Electrical Engineering, his work career took us to many locales … Fonthill, ON; Prince George, BC; Sarnia, ON and then (by choice) a new »career» as a farmer in Osprey Twp. Lifelong friendships are the lasting rewards of these many moves.
Our family is so appreciative of the wonderful and compassionate TLC given to Mauno by the staff of Pretty River Residence (Collingwood) these past 7 months and to the wonderful nurses of St. Elizabeth’s. Thank you ALL, so much.
Cremation has taken place, and the family will gather for a private farewell. In lieu of flowers, if desired, a memorial donation in Mauno’s name may be made to the Collingwood General & Marine Hospital or a charity of your choice. You will be missed dear Mauno — Lepaa Rauhassa (Rest in Peace).
