Obituary
We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Matilda Ludvik, beloved wife, mother, sister and friend. She passed away on Monday August 28 at the age of 84, peacefully surrounded by her family.
Matilda was born on February 3, 1939 to Matija and Marijana Sedej in Vrh Svetih Treh Kraljev, Slovenia. She was one of 12 children.
At the age of 30, she left her home for Canada in search of opportunity. She met her husband Vinko, of an amazing 47 years, and together built a beautiful life. They had two daughters, Rosemary and Helen (Gary).
Matilda loved to sew, making her own wedding dress and clothes for her young daughters. She enjoyed listening to Slovenian radio program every Saturday night with Vinko, and being in her garden as soon and as long as the Canadian weather allowed. It brought her great joy gifting her garden’s bounty of tomatoes, beans and zucchini to her friends and family.
In addition to her husband and daughters, she is survived by her brother Matija in Canada, and her sister Bernarda and brothers Franc and Jakob in Slovenia and many nieces and nephews, who will miss her dearly. She is predeceased by her parents, brothers Jozef, Janez and Vinko and her sisters Marija, Antonja, Ivana and Vida.
Friends will be received on Friday, September 1 from 9:00 am to 10:00 am at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church (739 Brown’s Line, Etobicoke). A Funeral Mass will follow, and the family will host a reception in the hall of the Slovenian Cultural Centre attached to the church after mass. Interment at Assumption Catholic Cemetery after the reception.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made in her memory to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity close to your heart.
Her family will continue to honour her legacy by living life to the fullest and keeping her garden nearly as spectacular as she would.
