Obituary of Mary Sherwood
It is with sadness that Mary Jane Sherwood’s family announce her death which occurred on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Mary was the daughter of Gerald and Jane (Cashol) Totton of Midland. After meeting her soulmate Vaughan Sherwood at the Gagetown Fair, they were married on August 23, 1972. She came to live on his family farm in Upperton, bringing along her beautiful horse Cherokee. They became parents to Trevor and Stacy and as their family grew, they worked hard together to build their forever home.
As a busy farmwife and a young mother, Mary always had time to share her love of horses and outdoor activities with her children. They enjoyed camping, long bike rides to Midland and snowshoeing up on Silver Hill. Always busy, she worked in the woods and the fields with Vaughan, became a Brownie leader, and as a great baker provided treats for the guests who came for sleigh rides.
Sadly, multiple sclerosis soon showed up (1980) and began to rob Mary of her active lifestyle. She adjusted to her new life with a quiet acceptance, courageous heart, and a brave smile. Without hesitation, Vaughan became her devoted caregiver. The love of her children and the arrival of three beautiful grandchildren were her greatest sources of strength. The annual summer visits were a highlight. They loved playing together, including races with the wheelchair. They stayed connected when back in Alberta by playing for hours on the phone. She was so proud of the fine young people they have grown to be and of their many accomplishments.
Mary is survived by her son Trevor Sherwood and his partner Norma Manning; her daughter Stacy Nice and her husband Dart and her grandchildren Jacob, Teri-Lynn and Ashlynn Nice; brothers: George Totton (Mary Crowley), Glenn Totton (Heather), Tom Totton (Darlene); sisters: Meria Reicker (Jim), Veronica Buchanan, Margaret Mott (Wayne) and Amy Mullin (Troy Taylor).
Mary was predeceased by her husband Vaughan (2023), her parents Gerald and Jane, her sister Theresa, and her brothers Alvin and Shawn.
Mary was finally able to beat MS when she took back control of her life and went to join her deeply missed husband Vaughan. Once again, with a quiet acceptance, courageous heart, and a brave smile.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Home (506-832-5541), 1063 Main Street, Hampton, NB, where visitation will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2024, from 12:00 to 2:00PM. The funeral service will immediately follow at 2:00 in the Reid’s Chapel. Interment will take place at St. Peter’s Anglican Cemetery in Upham.
