Mary Theresa O’Brien
Mary T. O’Brien March 7, 1925 – April 12, 2024 at 2:09 am at Headwaters Health Care, Orangeville, Ontario
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dear mom (‘Nanny’). Nanny lived a long and mostly happy life filled with many quiet adventures. Mary was born, Mary Theresa Crowe, to Margaret Kelly and Edward Crowe in Maniwaki, Quebec but grew up in Kapuskasing, Ontario. Mary was the eldest of four and later had a second family of six half siblings. She moved to Toronto as a teenager and soon after met her ‘soon to be’ husband, Terrence James O’Brien.
Nanny spent much of her life serving people food – at work in various restaurants, at home and in later years baking for fundraising sales at the Seniors’ Centre and for the Church. She made the best ever spaghetti sauce! Nanny was a social butterfly and enjoyed being in family and/or social gatherings of any kind. For many years she was the ‘glue that binds’ being the center of attention and reason for many family gatherings. She loved playing cards (canasta or euchre) with family and friends or at the Senior Centre card parties; she would enjoy bus trips with friends to visit a casino for a day of gambling fun and great meals. She talked with fondness of her bowling years and proudly displayed her many trophies. She loved to go to bingo with anyone. It was never too early in the day to get ready for bingo. Dressed up with lucky charms, plenty of dabbers and a good supply of snacks in hand – off she went ready to win the jackpot, and if her numbers weren’t called, she wasn’t shy about telling the caller to do a better job.
With some help from her eldest son, James, mom enjoyed keeping her flower beds bright and beautiful in Orangeville. She also enjoyed travelling, whether it was by plane, train, bus or car. She made several trips to different parts of the US with her husband or with her daughter, Colleen. She made many visits to New Brunswick to be with her son, Patrick and his family where she enjoyed time at the lake or even in the backyard pool. Many March birthday parties were spent in NB – even a sleigh ride on her 90th birthday.
Mom is survived by three children, James O’Brien (Barb), Colleen O’Brien, Patrick O’Brien (Antoinette); seven grandchildren, Veronica Strother (York), Ian MacCorquodale (Lorie), Amy MacCorquodale (Chris), Ely Waring (Gilbert), Anita O’Brien (Mike), Blake O’Brien, Matthew O’Brien, five great grandchildren, Kirsten O’Brien, Deirdre O’Brien, Calvin Smith, Curtis Smith, and Leila MacCorquodale-Pegg. Mary was predeceased by her husband Terrence O’Brien; three siblings, Kathleen DesLaurier, Bernard Crowe, and Loretta Sauve; grandson, Terrence O’Brien.
A tree will be planted in memory of Mary in the Dods & McNair Memorial Forest at the Island Lake Conservation Area, Orangeville. 22nd Annual Dedication Service will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.
