Mary Margaret (Peggy) Winnifred Hall (née Payton) 13 November 1925 – 11 January 2024
Peacefully in her sleep. Peggy, born in Toronto to Walter and Edith (née Miller) Payton, grew up with her older sister Lois Fallon (b. 18 May 1917 – d. 3 Jan 2013) and older brother Douglas Allan (b.11 May 1920 – d. 13 Nov 1943 in action with the RCAF). Peggy was particularly close to Allan and it was devastating that he died on her birthday.
After graduating from nursing school in the Class of ‘49, a profession she followed her whole life, Peggy married WWII RCAF veteran Ed (William Edgar John Hall b. 7 Sep 1925 – d. 28 Feb 1973) in 1950, who lived across the street on Forman Avenue. They began their adventure together enjoying a wonderful life exploring Canada and living in many cities from coast to coast. Peggy’s children, John (Marie) and James (Ursula) were born in New Westminster while they lived in Vancouver proper.
Later in her career, Peggy transferred to the Red Cross as a local director of client services and during this time she earned a degree in Business Administration. This work was quite dear to her heart and she thoroughly enjoyed this position in both Saint John, NB, and Toronto. Living in Toronto also brought her back into the fold of many close friends and extended family that she could see regularly; which, she cherished.
Peggy enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren Alisha (Adam), Melisa, Alex, and Will (Richard), as well as her great-grandchild, Desmond. She also had wonderful memories of her niece Wendy (Neil) and nephew Alan (Marion) and their families, along with many very close family friends and their children who were considered family. Peggy had many hobbies, including painting, travelling, skiing, and working with children in art appreciation.
Peggy was predeceased by her parents, husband, siblings, and nephew Alan; as well as, most of her peers given her age. Peggy lived under five Canadian monarchs during her life who were Their Majesties George V, Edward VIII, George VI, Elizabeth II, and Charles III to all of whom she was a loyal subject. Her Majesty’s passing in 2022 was tough on Peggy.
Peggy had a special relationship with her niece-in-law, Marion, who called her almost daily and she loved to hear from her great nieces and nephews, along with regular visits from her grandson Alex. Peggy’s special day was Zooming with her youngest grandson, Will, who Zoomed with her every Sunday afternoon.
A special thank-you to Peggy’s neighbours, Vicki, Peter, and Dale, who connected with her on an almost daily basis which she enjoyed immensely; and, who also, provided some assistance over the years. The kindness and friendships with other residents was much appreciated. We would also like to thank Doctors Conter and Baker for their outstanding care over the years and to Kate, Mom’s physiotherapist.
‘Crossing the Bar’
“[…] For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face-to-face
When I have crost the bar.»
– Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1889)
Cremation has taken place and at Peggy’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service.
No flowers – Donations may be made in her memory to a charity of your choice.
