Tate (MacDonald), Mary Marguerite
Elizabeth of Linwood passed away peacefully on October
13, 2024, aged 91 at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital,
Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
Marguerite was
born in Montreal, Quebec, on November 30,1932 to Mabel (Guthreau) and
Archie MacDonald. Her mother passed away when Marguerite was only
three years old, and she was raised by her maternal grandparents in
Linwood, Nova Scotia thereafter. Although she lived with her
grandparents, Marguerite maintained a close relationship with her
father, and her ties to her MacDonald relatives and to Creignish Rear,
were strong throughout her life.
At the age of
18, Marguerite married Austin Tate, and they built a life together and
raised their family of nine children, four boys and five
girls. Her family was the most important thing to her, and
she was incredibly proud of her children, grandchildren,
great-grandchildren and her great-great grandchildren. She loved
spending time visiting with her family either just chatting, having a
good cup of tea or going for a drive. She enjoyed spending time with
old friends playing a game of cards, going shopping or playing
bingo.
Marguerite was
always a good cook and as her children grew up, she brought those
skills outside the home and worked at several different positions in
that capacity. She was a life-long lover of animals and whether they
were wild animals, farm animals or family pets, they were all special
to her. She loved gardening and enjoyed reading books, magazines,
newspapers and the National Enquirer –
Marguerite’s grandchildren fondly remember going to
Nan’s house and catching up with their favorite publication.
She had a cheerful, kind and humorous disposition; she loved to tell
stories and share her family and community knowledge. She will be
greatly missed by her family and friends.
She is
survived by her sons, George (Darlene), Archie (Donna), Eugene
(Danielle) and Rodney and by her daughters Jane (Bernie) Landry,
Cecilia (Linus) Fraser, Maria (Allen) DeYoung, her former
daughter-in-law Helen Tate; grandchildren Ian, Austin, Tracy, Glenda,
Larry, Brendon, Quentin, Dustin, Brittany, Breton, Eilidh, Breagha,
Mairi, Jonathan, Trent, Logan, Deidre, Sonya, Alexander, Mckayla, and
Christopher; her brother Alec (Jessie), sisters Janette Saab, Kay
Myles and Janice (Robert) Grant.
As well as her
parents and her stepmother, Lois, Marguerite was predeceased by her
husband Austin, her daughter Cathy Mah, her daughter Mary in infancy,
her daughter-in-law, Judy (MacIntyre), her son-in-law, Roy Mah, her
brother Jack, her brother Patrick in infancy, and brothers-in-law
Mickey Myles and Gordon Saab.
Marguerite
will be missed by her family and friends, as well as her extended
family at Highland Crest Home where she lived for the last several
years. The family is thankful for the care and friendship she received
there. The family is also grateful for the staff at St.
Martha’s Hospital who provided compassion and care to her
for the last three months.
There will be
no visitation. Funeral mass will be held Friday, October 18 at 11 am
at St. Peter’s Church, Tracadie, with Father John Barry
presiding. Burial in the parish cemetery.
In Memoriam,
donations may be made to a charity of your
choice.
