Mary Louise (Neubert) Davis – age 100 of Montgomery, TX passed away peacefully Saturday, June 24, 2023. Her strong heart and constitution kept her active until a major stroke just days before her death. She was born in Knoxville, TN, January 10, 1923, the first child of Benjamin Louis Neubert and Anna Leona (Williams) Neubert. During the depression, the family moved from Knoxville to a farm in Corryton where the family was well fed. Ben and Leona had four other children: Imogene Ruth (Neubert) Bozeman, married to Lawrence; Anna Juanita (Neubert) Renfro, married to Haskell; Bettye Evelyn (Neubert) Galbraith, married to Francis; and Charles Arnton Neubert, married to Margaret Ann. Mary Louise was the last surviving family member.
Mary Louise and Kennis Haynes Davis were married August 27, 1945. Their child, Donna Sue Davis, is their sole survivor. She and her husband Paul Ewing Mayes, MD, live in Montgomery, TX where Mary Louise joined them the last several years of her life. About seventy-five of the neighborhood ladies gathered to celebrate her 100th birthday; her inviting smile was always engaging. Mary Louise was a life-long member of Corryton Baptist Church. It is said she worked in Vacation Bible School the day her daughter was born. She was a leader of the Girls in Action, having seen several of her nieces advance through the ranks.
In her later years, she was involved in food pantries, first in Corryton, and then in Montgomery. Mary Louise grew up in the World War II era when women were encouraged to join the work force. After business school, she went to work for the Tennessee Valley Authority and later the TVA Credit Union. She remembered helping international employees with their tasks upon first arrival in the US. For instance, she even helped them get seat belts installed in their cars! She maintained friendships with her colleagues throughout her life, visiting them when she returned to Tennessee. Mary Louise was diligent with details, compulsive about organization and planning, sometimes maddening to friends and family. Those characteristics served her well as she managed a very large loan department, etc. Mary Louise enjoyed travelling, including extensive international travel. She made “travelling friends” and was already ready to go when they needed someone for a trip to Russia or India or South Africa or wherever. Yet again, she diligently organized the photos into albums for reminiscing. She lived energetically, full of curiosity, a natural fit with any group. She was gracious.
A graveside service will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday, July 5, 2023, at Eastview Memorial Gardens, Strawberry Plains, TN, officiated by Dr. Rocky Ramsey.
