Mom died on Thursday,
May 2, 2024 peacefully at home, surrounded by her family. Born in 1931
to George and Mary Esther (Putnam) Porter, she was the last surviving
member of the original Porter family from Masstown.
Mom was predeceased by
sisters, Francis Pash (Ernie) and Dorothy Rice (Glen); brothers,
Arthur Porter (Dawn), Donald Porter (Helen) and John Porter (Vivian);
daughters-in-law, Kathleen (Dan) and Teresa (Jeff). She was also
predeceased by her husband, Don Goodspeed (2021). Loving partners for
over seventy years, Mom and Dad together raised and inspired four
children, travelled extensively, cultivated many close and devoted
friends, and spread their love of song and dance.
Mom was a welcoming,
forgiving and loyal parent. She maintained close relationships with
her extended family, always offering love and support for all. She was
proud of her rural roots, and strove to instill a love of Mother
Nature in her children. She created wonderful vegetable and flower
gardens and shared many insights into the natural
world.
Music was a part of
her soul. She taught many students piano and continued to find much
enjoyment from her time at the piano bench. She and Dad loved to sing.
They were long-time members of St. Andrews United church choir and
also sang in the Truro Cantabile choir. True snowbirds, they joined
their church choir in Florida and participated in many musical
productions staged at C21 Park in Fort Myers, their winter home for
three decades.
Mom had a creative
spark, resulting in many and varied treasures that have been gifted to
family and friends. She would often create narrative poems to mark
significant family events. She was an accomplished seamstress, making
clothing, draperies and quilts for herself, her family and others. In
her later years she particularly enjoyed needlework. As a long-time
member of the Marigold Guild, she undertook many intricate and
challenging projects that have become family keepsakes. Mom also
enjoyed painting, working in various media over the years, and often
teaming up with Dad decorating wooden pieces built in his
workshop.
Mom and Dad were among
the first members of Ski Wentworth and enjoyed many winters on the
slopes with their family. She was also a member of the Truro Curling
Club for several years. She was passionate about golf, a long-time
member of the Truro Golf Club, playing regularly up to her 90th year.
She was an avid card player and took great delight in winning. Dancing
was perhaps her favourite activity. It was a joy to watch her and Dad
glide around the dance floor together.
A life well lived! She
is survived by her sons, Dan (Rosemary), Jeff (Amara), Paul (Genie);
her daughter, Karen (John McNeil), five adult grandchildren and four
delightful great grandchildren.
A celebration of her
life will be held 11 am on Friday, May 24, 2024 at St. Andrews United
Church, Reverend Shannon MacLean officiating. Donations in memory of
Joyce can be made to Cancer Care, QEII Health Sciences Foundation, The
Kidney Foundation, Atlantic Chapter or to a charity of
choice.
Arrangements have been
entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young
Street, Truro. Tributes, words of comfort and memories may be shared
