We are saddened to announce the passing of Mary Jean Waters. She passed peacefully on February 1, 2024, at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington, at the age of 93.
Born on October 17, 1930, in Deepdale Manitoba, Mary was known for her zest for life, thirst for new experiences, and love of sharing and connecting with others. She was a fiercely independent person who lived a life of full of adventure. At the age of 16, she moved by herself from Manitoba to Ontario where she lived in Toronto, London and finally settling in Burlington.
While many people start to slow down as their life progresses, Mary’s later years were full of adventures and travels all over the world. She was a great lover of the outdoors and an active member of the Halton Outdoors Club, taking every opportunity to ski, bike and hike around Ontario and beyond. She spent many years volunteering as a docent at the Art Gallery of Burlington, where she loved teaching and connecting with visitors. She was also a world traveller, not merely a tourist, but an explorer who sought out unique destinations, and loved getting to know the people she met along the way. For many years she took extended trips overseas to teach in places such as Belarus and Poland. Forging friendships with the youth and families in these programs brought her immense joy and she always came back with countless memories, photos, and stories to share.
We celebrate her remarkably full life and will remember her adventurous and vivacious spirit.
Mary is survived by her two daughters, Diane Knyf (Martin) and Lori Waters, and grandchildren Kaitlin (Nik) and Nancy, and great-grandchild Wyatt. Many thanks to the staff at Martha’s Landing for their support and care. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Bruce Trail Conservancy.
