Mary Jane Swetnam, 89,

With great sadness, we
announce the passing of our loving mother, grandmother, great
grandmother friend and mentor. Mary passed away peacefully on Sunday,
August 11, 2024.
Mary spent her first
eighteen years in Tupperville, Annapolis Co. living with her parents,
Reg and Marian (Hopkins) Inglis, and her three siblings, Margaret
(Hagerman), Jean (Tan) and Ruth (Kreibich). She was a graduate of
Bridgetown Regional High School, Provincial Normal College and Mount
Allision University. She went on to teach junior high grades in
Lawrencetown and Hants East Rural High School and this is where she
met and married her true love, Bill Swetnam.
Mary had been involved
in several organizations over the years, Sheffield Mill’s
Women’s Institute, as well as a past president of the Kings
East District Women’s Institute. She was a former member of
the V.O.N. Board in Kings County. She also served on the BEKA Board of
Directors, was a member of the Board of Governors of Pine Hill
Divinity College for six years and a faithful member of the Canard
United Church, where she had acted as choir director, assistant
organist, a member of choir, the session, past president of the United
Church Women, and a member of the Board of Trustees. Mary joined the
Blanchard Fraser Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and went on to become
president of the Valley Regional Hospital Auxiliary. She served as the
first chairperson of the Western Region of the Nova Scotia Association
of Health Auxiliaries, eventually becoming president. Mary was one of
the Valley Regional Hospital chapel organists for many years. She was
also the recipient of a Democracy 250 award in 2008 and the Paul
Harris Fellowship pin in 2010.
On the forefront of
her many life achievements was always her family. Mary was a devoted
wife, an adoring, exceptional mother, grandmother and
great-grandmother. She was a great cook, and always had something
baking when you came for a visit. You were expected to eat much more
than you could and never left feeling hungry. Mary loved music,
singing, playing the piano and took great pride in her penmanship. She
spent many tireless hours teaching all of us to drive, which could
include many trips to Dairy Queen if we did a good job. Mary often
commented that her biggest joy in life was being married to Bill and
being the mother of five wonderful children, grandmother to 12 lovely
grandchildren and great-grandmother to her four lovely
great-grandchildren. They ‘broke the mold’ with
our mother and we are so fortunate to have been blessed with her
guidance, assurance and love throughout our lives. She put so much of
herself into her family, her community and into making life pleasant
for all around her. Mary was an amazing person inside and out and will
be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Mary is survived by
her five children, Peter, Bruce (Angie), Anne (Glendon Davison),
Jeanne (Allan Sheffield) and John (Heather) and her sisters, Margaret
Hagerman, Jean Tan and Ruth Kreibich. Gram is survived by her twelve
grandchildren, William, Megan and Sarah (Jean) Swetnam, Ryan and Dylan
Swetnam, Gregory Walker, Hugh and Christopher Eaton, Matthew, David
and Rachel Sheffield, and Tessa Swetnam. She is also survived by her
four great grandchildren, Leo, Remi, Jaylynn and Ashlan. In addition
to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William
«Bill» in 2011 and by her brother-in-law, Randall
Hagerman.
The family would like
to extend heartfelt thanks to the caregivers who supported Mary while
she was still at home, and for the additional care provided while she
was at Wolfville Nursing Home.
Cremation has taken
place. A private family burial will take place in Canard Burial
Ground. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, August 29,
2024 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. A celebration of
Mary’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 30th
in Canard Community Church, Upper Canard, with a reception to follow.
Reverend John Wray and Reverend Ivan Norton officiating. For those

Saturday, August 31st. Donations in memory may be made to Valley
Regional Hospital Foundation and Canadian Red Cross. Funeral
