Born on September 15, 1931 in Toronto, cherished daughter of William Robert Phillips of Amaranth Township, Ontario and Sarah Elizabeth Wilkins of Rutherfordton, North Carolina.
Jane was brought up to believe that her own abilities were the only limit to what she could achieve. She attended the University of Toronto, earning a BASc in chemical engineering in 1953, when female students were a rarity in the department. She studied physical chemistry at Bryn Mawr College on a scholarship. After graduating in 1954, Jane worked for Dupont in Wilmington, Delaware, for two years before earning a PhD in physical chemistry at Johns Hopkins University in 1960. Two years of post-doctoral research followed, one with Energy, Mines and Resources in Ottawa and one at the Queen’s University in Belfast (British Petroleum Fellowship).
Returning to Toronto, Jane began a distinguished career in research, teaching, counselling and administration at U of T, becoming a catalyst for women in engineering. Initially hired as a Demonstrator in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry, positions as Lecturer (1963-1972), Assistant Professor (1972-1977) and Associate Professor (1977-1989) preceded her appointment to Professor in 1989. She served as Associate Chairman of the Department (1990 – 1991), Associate Dean, Physical Sciences, School of Graduate Studies (1991-1994) and Associate Chair, Coordinator of Graduate Studies with the Department (1995-1997). She was appointed Professor Emeritus in 1997 and remained active in teaching and administration, serving as Associate Chair, Coordinator of Undergraduate Studies (2000-2001). She led the development of the Ethics in Engineering course and was involved in early Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and Women in Engineering committees.
Jane was a Lifetime Member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario. She became the PEO’s first female academic President (1993-1994). She served on and chaired many committees, including 35 years of service on the Complaints Committee (Chair 2003-2009). She was elected Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada in recognition of Excellence in Research (1990), was a Life Member of the Canadian Catalysis Foundation, Director of the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers (1995-1997), Chair, Catalysis Division, Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (1995-1997), Director, Chemical Engineering Research Consultants Ltd. (1972-1997). She was Warden Camp One (Iron Ring), a member and executive of Sigma Xi and the Royal Canadian Institute for the Advancement of Science. The most recent of the numerous awards she received was the Engineering Alumni Medal from U of T in November 2023.
Her interests were not limited to academia. She collected 18th century blue and white porcelain, swam countless lengths of the pool at the Toronto Lawn and Tennis Club, enjoyed travel, gardening, theatre at Stratford and the Shaw Festivals, art, ballet and classical music.
Jane was an only child who never married nor had children. But as a student, she met bright young people from all over the world and formed lifelong friendships. And as a professor, she was proud of being a support to her students and treasured the lasting relationships that developed with many of them. Friends and cousins admired and respected her and everyone looked forward to her Christmas letters. She will be missed.
Over the years she shared her home with Ginger Cat, Twoey, Mooch and Mouse. Orange Cat accompanied her to the Bradgate Arms, where she resided for the past six years. Her final weeks were spent at St. Michael’s Hospital, where she died on March 18, 2024. Many thanks to the staff at the Bradgate and St. Mike’s for their support and care.
Jane passionately supported numerous charities, especially those involving animals, nature and the arts. She established a scholarship at Mt. St. Vincent University in mathematics in honour of her mother and one at U of T in Spanish in honour of her father. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the scholarships or to a charity of your choice.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at 11:00 am at St. Clement’s Church, 70 St. Clements Avenue, Toronto.
