Obituary
It is with much sadness and love that we announce the peaceful passing of Mary Ilchyshyn on December 24, 2022 at the age of 92.
Mary will be lovingly remembered by her nieces Lisa Tucker (husband Robert), Andrea Harwood-Jones (husband Chris, son Matthew, and daughter Alexa), and sister – in- law Louise Ilchyshyn. She is predeceased by her father Andrew, mother Irene, brother James, and husband Peter Berezowecki
Aunty was born in Pikwotonei, Manitoba in 1930 and enjoyed the northern life of fishing, hunting, berry picking and music making. She played the guitar and sang with brother Jim on guitar or fiddle and father Andrew on fiddle.
Upon finishing school in The Pas aunty began her life as a career woman. She worked as a sales person at Dembinski’s clothing store, thus beginning her love of fashion. She often wore lovely knits from Italy and the latest dresses. Aunty co – owned and ran the New Avenue Hotel for several years, then the electronics store JAYMAR with her former husband and brother Jim. She then worked at Birks, followed by managing women’s wear at The Bay.
Faith and family were very important to Aunty and she travelled to Winnipeg to be with family every Christmas Eve. She also loved hot weather and looked forward to staying with family in the Okanagan whenever possible. Aunty loved adventure and travel, and her nieces have fond memories of trips with her to Victoria and Hawaii. She was very involved with the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League in The Pas, and attended mass on a regular basis.
Mary’s family is grateful for the excellent care that she received at St. Paul’s Residence, as well as the doctors, nurses, and staff at St. Anthony’s Hospital during the last few weeks of her life. Gratitude also goes to neighbours Joy and Brian, Helen Cox for driving Aunty to the Anglican Church services, and Reverend Jann Brooks for end of life care.
A memorial service will be held in The Pas, Manitoba in the summer of 2023.
