Mary passed away peacefully with her family at her side on April 23rd, 2024. Mary is survived by her loving and devoted husband of almost 50 years, Peter Whittaker, and her faithful companion Sam. They will miss her terribly.
Mary was born in 1944 in Toronto and was the youngest of six children. A determined child, whose only wish was to spend as much time as possible riding at the horse barn. Mary was fearless when it came to riding and in later years often said, “I’ve got the scars to prove it” and would proudly display her keloid scars on both arms from surgery to repair horribly broken bones. Long hospital stays never discouraged her from getting back in the saddle and she continued riding for many years.
Mary was an enthusiast of all things Naval and met her husband Peter when they both volunteered with the Navy League Cadets Program of Canada in Hamilton.
Mary was a huge fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and her excitement was legendary. When watching games, she kept her rubber brick close in case she needed to throw it at the television and would courageously defend their honor at any cost.
Mary’s love of all animals was ever present, and she was a wonderful “pawrent” to many beloved fur babies throughout her life. She had an endless capacity to love anything with fur and would courageously defend any creature who she believed needed her.
Mary’s family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at Margaret’s Place for providing wonderful care, empathy, peace, and tranquility during her transition from this life into the next. Your work truly makes a difference, and we are forever grateful. The family would also like to thank everyone who visited in the last few weeks. Your company was greatly appreciated and will not be forgotten.
There will be an informal gathering to celebrate Mary’s life at the Royal Canadian Legion, Valley City Branch 36, 280 King Street West, Dundas, Ontario, L9H 1W1 in the Wentworth Room on Wednesday May 1st, 2024, from 6 pm to 8 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that if you would like to honor Mary’s life, please consider donating to Margaret’s Place or to a local animal shelter.
