Mary Bridget Jessome, age 86, passed away Friday, September 20, 2024, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Mom was born in Sydney on May 17, 1938, into an Irish family and grew up in the Pier. She was a daughter of the late Patrick and Martha (MacDougall) Murphy, the second youngest of six children.
When mom was two years old her mother suddenly passed away at the early age of 27 years and she moved next door to be raised by her paternal grandparents. Mom met our father when she was 16 and married him during a double wedding with her sister, Peggy and fiancé, Fred Neville, in October 1957. Over the next seven years she gave birth to six children.
Mom was a fun and loving mother, always there for us. She was easy to talk to and never judged us when we brought our concerns to her. When she was 37 years old, she learned how to drive and started to work part-time at Rhymes Flowers and then The Panhandler. After our father’s passing in 2015, she moved into her own apartment. This was the first time she ever lived alone, and she embraced her independence naturally.
Mom was a member of the Christopher Leadership Course and the Sydney Kinsmen Club. For many years, she bowled and played cards, mostly cribbage with groups in Sydney, New Waterford and North Sydney. Mom and dad also enjoyed travelling to many places worldwide and were avid golfers at Lingan Golf and Country Club.
She is survived by her children, Patty-Lou, Audrey, Ricky, Ashley and Debbie (Jim); and grandchildren, Bridget Jessome (Shea), Shauna and Eric Schuiteboer and Issac McNevin.
Besides her parents, mom was predeceased by her infant son, Tommy; husband, Roy; brothers, John, Denis and Pat Murphy; and sisters, Catherine “Snooks” Steele and Peggy Currie. She was the last surviving member of her family.
A memorial service will be celebrated at Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier on Monday, September 30th at 10:00 am with Rev. Paul Murphy officiating. Interment will take place in New Calvary Cemetery, Whitney Pier.
