It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of
our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Mary Ann MacIsaac.
Mary Ann passed away peacefully on February 14, 2023, surrounded by
family and friends who bore witness to her life of kindness,
compassion and love.
Born in 1945 in Springhill, Nova Scotia, to Cecil and
Marie Milner, Mary Ann spent the first years of her life in Ontario.
After the death of her father in 1956, Mary Ann returned home to
Antigonish where she spent her formative years living with her sisters
Bobbie, Margie, Alice and Donna, their aunt Mae, and their beloved
mother, Marie. Mary Ann would spend the rest of her life living with
and amongst her four sisters, with whom she would share a life filled
with loving memories.
Mary Ann had an intrinsic desire to help those around
her. She was the consummate caregiver. It is not surprising, then,
that she spent her professional career in the service of others. In
1967, Mary Ann graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing
in Glace Bay. When her studies concluded, she began her nursing career
at St. Martha’s, before working in hospitals in Calgary,
Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, Florida. In 1977, Mary Ann
returned to St. Martha’s where she would spend the rest of
her nursing career working in the ICU and PCU of that hospital. To her
patients, Mary Ann provided exceptional care which not only included
her outstanding nursing skills but also her quick wit and disarming
humour. These attributes put Mary Ann’s patients at ease
even in the direst of circumstances. Her selflessness and dedication
to her patients touched the lives of countless families, and the love
and compassion she provided her patients will not soon be
forgotten.
In the spring of 1975, a young Mary Ann Milner attended
a Tory dance on her first date with Angus MacIsaac. What followed from
that evening was an almost 50-year relationship of mutual respect,
love and admiration. Angus and Mary Ann were married at Christmas in
1975. Following their marriage, they relocated to Calgary, Alberta.
While in the West, they welcomed their first son, Lorne, before
returning to Guysborough, Nova Scotia in 1977. In 1979, they welcomed
their second son, Kyle, and later that year they moved back to
Antigonish where they would spend the next several decades in their
home on Old South River Road, a neighbourhood which the MacIsaac
family would come to love and adore. Mary Ann and Angus had a truly
symbiotic relationship, each loving and supporting the other in equal
measure. For almost 50 years, the two loved and lived together,
sharing the joys of raising their children and, eventually, 5
grandchildren. They travelled the globe together, each always ready
for the next experience. Mary Ann’s love of Angus, and his
of her, were an inspiration to all who were so privileged to know
them.
Mary Ann, together with Angus, Lorne and Kyle, enjoyed
a lifetime of experiences, including various family vacations, which
in the early years usually consisted of spending time in hockey rinks
throughout the province. Lorne and Kyle were blessed to be raised in a
home in which their mother devoted love and attention to their growth
and well-being. When old enough to appreciate how fortunate they were
to have such loving and selfless parents, Lorne and Kyle would often
declare that they had won the parent
lottery.
Mary Ann had a special place in her heart for
Giant’s Lake, the scene of numerous family gatherings with
her extended family. She so enjoyed these events filled with food,
music and love. Mary Ann had a deep love and admiration for her
Giant’s Lake family, including her sister-in-law, Flora, her
brothers-in-law and her multiple loving nieces and
nephews.
In addition to her family, Mary Ann also had a close
circle of friends that together experienced a lifetime of adventure
and laughs. Mary Ann, flanked by Shirley Cuthbertson, Mora Wheeler and
Rosemary MacIsaac, lived a life full of fun, adventure, and endless
laughs and enjoyment. Mary Ann was so very fortunate to have such
wonderful and dedicated friends with whom she could share her
life’s journey. These four women shared an enduring bond of
love and friendship and we know that the loss of Mary Ann will be felt
deeply among this circle of friends.
The Old South River Road proved to be a neighborhood
rich with affinity and kinship. No better example of this was the
years of friendship and camaraderie enjoyed by Mary Ann with her
neighbours Helen Landry, Mary Lou O’Reilly, Joanne Curry and
Mary Morris. These wonderful women shared a sincere joy in each
others’ lives. Until the end of her life, Mary Ann remained
eternally grateful for the joy and friendship that she had with her
wonderful lifelong friends.
Those of us had the privilege of knowing Mary Ann will
all remember her clever wit and positive demeanour. She had an innate
ability to make everyone around her feel comfortable and at ease, and
her outlook on life was infectious. Whether it was cooking Christmas
dinner for her large and extended family or feeding any number of the
friends of Lorne or Kyle, Mary Ann’s kitchen was the centre
of countless meals. There, she showed a genuine interest in the lives
of those gathered around her table.
We are forever grateful for the dedicated and
compassionate level of care provided to Mary Ann by her long-time
family physician, Dr. Michelle Murphy; at the end of her time at Old
South River Road, by Judy MacNeil; and during the last two years of
her life, by the staff at the R.K. MacDonald. The staff at the R.K.
loved Mary Ann like a member of the family. The level of compassionate
care and professionalism shown by her care providers is without equal,
and we will be forever grateful for the love they showed our wife and
mother in the last years of her life.
Mary Ann is survived by her loving and devoted husband
of forty-seven years, Angus «Tando» MacIsaac, her sons,
Lorne (Alix) of Sudbury, Ontario, Kyle (Kate) of Halifax, Nova Scotia,
grandchildren Jason, Isabella, Lilliana, Robert and Owen, sister,
Donna (Lawrence) of Lismore, NS,. Mary Ann was predeceased by her
beloved mother Marie Milner, her father, Cecil Milner, and her sisters
Roberta (Bobbie) Gallagher, Margaret (Margie) Boyle and Alice
MacDonald
In all aspects of her life, Mary Ann loved and cared
deeply for her friends and family, and was kind and compassionate to
all of those around her. Her loss will be deeply felt by all who were
lucky enough to have her in their lives. We have been profoundly
touched by the outpouring of love and support provided to Mary Ann and
our family, and the stories told of her love and kindness shown
throughout her life. In recent days, our family was told that it was
impossible to enter a room in which Mary Ann was present, and not have
a smile on your face – we couldn’t agree
more.
Your loss will be felt deeply for the rest of our
lives, but we are so very grateful to have had the privilege of living
in a world in which we felt your love.
Visitation will be in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135
College Street, Antigonish on Friday, February
17th, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Mass
of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February
18th at 11:00 am in St. Ninian Cathedral,
Antigonish with Reverend Donald MacGillivray presiding.
Burial in the parish cemetery at a later
date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the R.K.
MacDonald Nursing Home Foundation.
