Mary Ann peacefully passed Wednesday May 15, 2024 at 12:27 am at the clinic in Lac Brochet, Mb comforted by her two daughters, Sarazine and Margaret. Mary Ann endured Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, high blood pressure, heart conditions, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and other illnesses for a number of years. She lived a well happy life despite her health conditions. She was a very strong, respected elder and got along well with many people, youth and elderly.
Mary Ann was born and raised in a northern remote area, her parents were Joseph Denechezhe and Sophie Laurent. At a young age she learned to gather and cut fire wood, haul water from a nearby lake, and hunt small game to survive. Some days, were harsh especially in the winter season. Hardships, did not stop her, she continued to provide for her family, until her brothers were of age to assist. She became skilled to live off the land, hunt, trap, gather and fish for family necessities and also helped raise her younger siblings.
In her early adulthood she married her husband, Felix Gazandlare. She raised eleven children and two grandchildren. She treated her children equally, and continued to work for her family essentials. She was a
fluent dene speaker had no formal education. She taught herself to understand the basic numeric skills. She was skilled at managing family financials. She was part of a group of members who cofounded to build the first local church. Mary Ann managed the funds collected for the church. Mary Ann had a strong faith in the Catholic Church. She taught herself, dene prayers and to sing dene hymns. She also taught herself to speak a few English words. She worked as a Janitor at the band office, to support her children. She loved to cook, bake, prepare traditional meals for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mary Ann was a great story teller. She had the ability to recall many historic events, and was able to provide full details with great accuracy. She loved to tell stories from childhood experiences to stories passed through her parents, elders, ancestors as maturing in her journey of life. She had great knowledge, had an awesome reasoning, provided good advice and was full of wisdom. She was a kind generous elder, had a golden heart and had always helped people, especially elders and families in need.
Mary Ann leaves to mourn her passing Children, Celestin, Sarah, Sarazine (Adam) , Martin (Sarah), Margaret (Ian), Gayle (Pierre).
Grandchildren Alice, Peter (Darlene), Paul (Stella), Jennifer, Richard, Linda (Scotty), Louie, Josephine (Peter), Doreen (Joseph), Christina, Tommy, Debbie (Brian), Brenda (Gideon), Ronald, Brianna (Marty), Courtney (Joey), Ariel, Axel, Anders, Addison, Stacey, Stalin, Bernell, Kiana, Fabian, Keira.
Great Grandchildren Darian, Pacey, Dillion, Phelix, Parker, Kami, Keri, Paul Jr, Kayden, Kayson, Kelsey, Kenzie, Sophia, Desiree, Adrien, Alexander, Alexie, Destiny, Haylie, Felix, Halle, Carla, Stephanie. Shakayla, Isiah, Pearl, Desiree, Deanna, Danae, Alannah, Aladdah, Journey, Joy, Jaylene, Turquoise, Antonio, Rayden, Andre, Ashton, Andrew, Tammy, Tommy (Jr), Alayah, Trayden, Kash, Raya, Houston, Brody, Brielle, Gia, Reid, Shamus, Dominic, Gabriel, Walter,
Forrest, Keian.
Great Great Grand Children Alexis Linklater, Gregory Farrow Jr, Zaiden Denechezhe, Tyrien Danttouze-Antsanen, Aria, Aliza, Lennox.
Sister Marie Adele (Julian) Dettanikkeaze Nephew Ovide Tssessaze.
First Cousin/Special Friend Therese Dettanikkeaze Sr, Elise Denechezhe and Son In-Law Ronnie Farrow.
Nieces and Nephews Therese, Annie, George, Dora, Bill, Pierre, Rose, Sophie Colomb, Paul, Laura, Alex and Great Nieces and Nephews.
Mary Ann had a special place in her heart for all her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, sister, nephews and nieces. She was a special friend to many and to numerous relatives from Lac Brochet, Brochet, Wollaston Lake and Black Lake.
Mary Ann was predeceased by her Parents Joseph Denechezhe and Sophie Laurent, In-laws Peter and Ann Gazandlare Daughters Doreen Gazandlare, Adele Tssessaze, Rita Farrow, Mary Jean Brouillette, Son Joseph Gazandlare Brothers Alfred and Pierre Denechezhe Sister Genevieve Veuillot, her Niece Josephine Denechezhe, Sisters in law Therese and Marie Denechezhe. Her Brother-in law Abel Denechezhe. Son in-law John Tssessaze, Grand Daughter Nina Brouillette, Angel Gazandlare, Rosalie Tssessaze Great Grandson Gregory Farrow-StPierre. Special Friends Angelique Denechezhe and Annie Ottennadazhe.
Wake services will be the Petit Casimir Memorial School with Funeral Mass celebrated by Father Stephen Kulanthai Samy SDM at the Blessed Kateri Roman Catholic Parish in Lac Brochet. Interment will follow in the Lac Brochet Cemetery.
