Obituary
Mary Amelia Walls (Millington), born November 2nd, 1925, in London, England, passed away at the Regional Hospital on February 22nd, 2023.
She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn (Jim) Kane and Gail Luft, her grandchildren Brian Walls, Ryan Kane, Sara (Tom) Lawson, Adam Glaspy, Hayley Luft and Roebi (Nathaniel) McLellan, her great grandchildren Kyle, Dylan, Jenna, Arlo, Gavin, Spencer, Ethan, Kevin, and Alfred, and her nephew Peter (Amelia) Millington. She will be missed by her loyal dog London.
She was predeceased by her parents William and Harriet Millington, her siblings Alfred, Daisy, Louisa, and John, her husband Donald (2001), and her two sons Andrew (2020) and Brian (1958).
Mary knew the value of a loving family and hard work. Growing up in London during the Second World War she met and fell in love with her husband. In 1946 she arrived in Canada as a War Bride with their son where she was reunited with her husband. Having done many jobs, she was always there to lend a helping hand – some of her most notable include: teaching swimming to the disabled, working at an orphanage on the West Side, caring for the elderly at two nursing homes, running the canteen at Mispec Beach with her husband, and she was a dedicated employee of K-Mart and the United Store. In addition to her work, she was a passionate volunteer. She was past President of the Hampton Food Bank, and one of her proudest accomplishments was being in the auxiliary for 70 years and the last charter member of Branch 53 – Jervis Bay Legion. Mary was also recognized several times in her life, some of which include Hampton’s Lady of the Year in 2000 and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal in 2023. Mary’s family was closest to her heart. Described as a dedicated and “the best” mother, Nanny, and great-grandmother, her love lives on in each generation left behind. She was kind, stubborn, giving, strong, funny, resilient, loving, and generous. When asked “to what do you attribute your long life?” her response was always “having a sense of humour”. She was an avid storyteller and was quick to sing a tune or play a game. One of her favourite stories to tell was one that stretched the truth, as many family members recall her “having played and gone to school with the Queen of England.” Mary was a wonderful baker and famous for her lemon bread. She was quick to complain about the temperature of her tea, and it simply was not right, if not hot. Having lived independently in her own home until her recent fall, she will always be remembered as the centre of our family. She will be greatly missed by many, especially her family.
Arrangements are under the care of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road. A celebration of life will take place March 5th, 2023, from 2:00-4:00 pm at the Jervis Bay Legion (Branch 53) located at 1016 Bayside Drive, Saint John, New Brunswick. Donations in remembrance of Mary may be made to Branch 53 Legion, the Saint John SPCA, your local food bank, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
