Martin Halcrow Bolland
1938-2024
Martin
Bolland passed away on Monday, September 9, 2024 in Valley Regional
Hospital, Kentville at the age of 85. Born October 24, 1938, in
Cornwall, England. He was the son of Fred and Joan (Harrison) Bolland.
At a
young age, his family moved to London where he experienced the air
invasions of WWII. Martin was a cadet with the Metropolitan London
Police before he emigrated to Canada at the age of 18 and subsequently
joined the RCMP. He was posted to Kentville where he met the love of
his life, Geraldine Pineo. Martin and Geraldine were married in 1960
and welcomed two children: Eric (1961) and Kevyn (1963). The family
moved to Scarborough, Ontario in 1961 where he worked Security and
Intelligence with the RCMP until 1965 when he left the force to pursue
part-time studies at York University to complete his Bachelor of Arts
and start his own business, Bolland Evidence Research. In 1970, the
family returned to New Minas where Martin completed his Bachelor of
Education at Acadia University. He taught at King’s-Edgehill School
from 1971-1980 where he coached many teams, notably cross-country
skiing and biathlon. Many students benefited from his guidance as a
teacher, coach, and mentor.
Martin
is credited with bringing the Duke of Edinburgh and biathlon programs
to KES. He coached the provincial biathlon team which included his son
Eric. In 1980, Martin left KES to teach at Kings County Academy (KCA)
until his retirement in 2000. He was fondly respected as a teacher for
his genuine interest in the lives of his students as well his gift of
telling stories about his adventures. Former students often speak
fondly of the impact he had on their lives. Martin loved his rapport
with students and was always keenly interested in their endeavours
after graduation.
Martin
had many interests and hobbies. He and Geraldine loved travelling and
spent their summers exploring France, Italy, Switzerland and the UK.
Forever an athlete, Martin was certified in scuba driving and judo. He
completed six marathons: three in NS, two in England and one in
Switzerland. He also kept busy with cycling, kayaking, hiking,
camping, etc. In his retirement, he enjoyed art, particularly
sketching and watercolour.
Martin
is predeceased by his son, Kevyn and his wife, Geraldine. He is
survived by son, Eric (Laurie) Kentville; brother, Nigel (Ellie)
Pittsburgh; grandchildren, Emma (Kentville) and Thomas (Leah)
Coldbrook.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation
will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 15 in the
White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service (with
livestream available) will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September
16, 2024, with a reception to follow. Private family interment will

his wishes, donations can be made to Alzheimer’s Society of Nova
Scotia or KCA Breakfast Program in lieu of flowers. The family would
like to thank Dr. Sinclair, the staff at Valley Regional Hospital, VON
and the many friends and family who supported Martin. Funeral
arrangements have been entrusted to the
