November 24, 1925 – February 12, 2024 After a life well lived, Ellen Martha Charison passed away peacefully at her home in Teulon on February 12, 2024 at the age of 98. She was born on November 24, 1925, in Balmoral, Manitoba, to Florence and George Smaldon.
She is survived by her daughters Linda (Bun) Baxter, Shelley Eros (Ron Branconnier), Candy (Herb) Laszchuk, Kathy Cockerill (Doug Bottrell), and son-in-law Frank Dziedzic. Grandchildren: Keith Baxter, Karl (Sapphira) Baxter, Dana (Walter) Stewart, Darci (Ken) Loehmer, Scott Eros, Dusty Laszchuk, Carmen Laszchuk, Aaron (Chelsea) Cockerill and Cherise Griffin. Great grandchildren: Duncan, Desiree, Cameron, Dominic, Tiffany, Ella, Alexa, Harper, Hudson and Addison.
Preceding her in death were her husband Alex Charison in 1992; daughter Diane Dziedzic; sons-in-law Glenn Cockerill and Craig Eros; grandsons Bobby, Kory, Kyle and Kevin; siblings Howard, Billy, Edna, Bobby, Violet and Harold; lifelong friends Lillian Furness, Edna Tarrant and Shirley Jeske.
Martha lived life to the fullest, embodying a spirit of adventure and determination. She earned her pilot’s license in 1980 at the age of 55, a testament to her adventurous nature. In her later years, Martha found joy in gardening, planting an impressive 1500 gladioli by herself at the age of 75.
She was supportive of the family’s turkey business and was so proud when Alex and Stan were recognized as Farmer of the Year in 1990, a well-deserved honour for their dedication and hard work. She loved visiting customers with Alex, turkey conventions, delivering poults and hosting customers in their home.
Martha’s adventurous spirit took her to far-flung destinations, with Switzerland in 1979 being just the beginning. Texas, Hawaii, Australia, and a fantastic world cruise with her sister Edna in 1994. She cherished her winter home in Deerfield Beach, Florida, where they enjoyed the sunshine and golf.
Martha embraced life with gusto, indulging in hobbies like bowling, golfing, fishing, and curling. She even installed an inground pool in 1973, despite not being able to swim herself, ensuring her children and countless others learned this essential skill. As a family they enjoyed many good fishing trips up to Dauphin River where they became very good friends with the camp owners family – the Letander’s. She also loved visiting with her Hutterite friends.
Despite her many adventures, Martha’s greatest joy was found in the simple moments spent with her family. She was a fixture at her grandchildren’s games and concerts. One of her proudest moments was seeing her grandson Aaron golfing on TV for the first time.
Martha was able to live independently her entire 98 years. She knew she could count on “old faithful” every week to take her out for lunch and shopping. Known for her colorful language and feisty disposition, Martha had a knack for keeping those around her on their toes. Her quick wit and irreverent humor endeared her to all who knew her, leaving behind a legacy of joy and laughter.
Martha had an unwavering passion for animals and their well being. Donations in her memory can be made to Grateful Friends Animal Rescue, Box 999, Teulon, MB, R0C 3B0.
Celebration of life will be held on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at 11:00 am in the Gunton – Greenwood Community Hall.
