Marlene Hill Obituary
S. MARLENE HILL
May 31, 1949 – April 29, 2024
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Marlene Hill, a dearly loved woman who was truly one of a kind.
Marlene passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at LGH after a lengthy struggle with COPD. She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Alan Kellie, their children Erin (Ryan), Camille and her five cherished grandchildren: Meryk, Madox, Maeve, Adelaide and Conan.
Marlene was the 7th child (of 9) born to Ella and Gordon Hill on a farm in Markdale, Ontario. She also leaves behind her siblings Annette, Marie, Gail, Wendy and Bill in Ontario, her niece Terry here in Vancouver and so many friends and family members.
Marlene came west to BC in 1968 and began her career working in the Pension Benefits and Health-Welfare industry and then clerking in Trade Unions.
One of her proudest achievements was as the sole Union Rep responsible for running the ILGWU in downtown Vancouver where she negotiated everything including their first seniority work and layoff clause with great personal pride. She held that position from 1980-1986 and was also on the BC Federation of Labour Council from 1984-1986 working for Women’s Rights.
Marlene was well known for always acting with integrity and honesty. In 1986 she was the first woman appointed as a member of the Workers Compensation Review Boards from “Labour” as she was one of only a very few women signatories on union agreements that existed at that time. Marlene worked tirelessly as a Vice Chair at the WCRB and WCAT until she retired in 2007. She did this work with great sincerity, pride, and dedication. She became close friends with many other competent Members there and held those true friendships dear to the end.
Marlene was always ready to champion the cause of any worker or person she met that she could help. Anyone who knew her realized quickly that she had a keen eye for accuracy and decisiveness. We always trusted her conclusions and advice. She was a born Adjudicator and the Great Matriarch of advice for many.
Marlene met her partner Alan in December of 1971. Following their love of sailing they worked together to build a 35-foot f/g sailboat named Ustupu that they launched in 1976 and sailed for almost 2 decades. Eventually, they purchased their dream boat, a Maple Leaf 42 named Windbird. Marlene and Alan sailed the West Coast together for 40 years enjoying many adventures alongside friends Barrie & Sue Baptie. Marlene was never happier than when she had the sails up, the gunnels in the water and the wind in her hair.
Marlene’s culinary skills were renowned as she had fantastic abilities in the kitchen. She loved to cook, eat and share her exquisite meals.
Moving to Gibsons in 2013 she loved the tranquility of her home that brought her back to a small town and closer to her grandchildren. Though she wasn’t sailing anymore she truly enjoyed her spectacular view of Howe Sound and the North Shore.
Unfortunately, the last few months she lived with no voice, but we had great conversations in whispers.
She will be sorely missed.
