Marlene Ann West (née Wagler), age 66, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Innisfree House Hospice in Kitchener, Ontario, on October 29, 2024.
Born at what was then KW Hospital, Marlene spent her early years on her family’s farm near Wellesley. After her father, David Wagler, passed in 1961, the family moved to Millbank. Marlene is predeceased by her cherished mother, Luella Wagler (née Lichti), father-in-law Clifford West, and two brothers-in-law, Terry Dombroski and Lazar Vickovich.
Marlene leaves behind her loving husband, Bruce West; her “beautiful” daughters, Jessica and Jolene West; her sons-in-law, Serge LeVert-Chiasson and Matthew Williams; and her much-adored grandchildren, Rosa and Charlotte Williams, and Benjamin and Vivienne Chiasson. She is also survived by her siblings Gerald Wagler, Grace Kuepfer (Len), and Sharon Hilson (Larry), as well as her mother-in-law Marylou West (née Wark), sisters-in-law Dawna Hallman (John), Connie Miller (Mahlon), and Paulette West (Dwight), along with her numerous nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews. Marlene was much loved among her family and will be deeply missed by all.
Throughout her career in customer and financial services, Marlene held roles in Listowel, Stratford, Kincardine, and Kitchener, eventually spending many rewarding years at BMO Nesbitt Burns in Waterloo. She built lasting friendships and connections at every stop along her journey.
Marlene will be remembered for her infectious cheer and unique sense of humor, which lifted spirits even during life’s harder moments. She loved a good laugh, often at her own expense, had a quirky sense of fun, and strove to make every holiday special. Though she disliked cooking—potlucks were her nemesis—she was famous for her rhubarb pie and sharing vegetables from her garden with friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers.
Always up for an adventure, Marlene was a favourite companion on family trips, even if that meant getting lost somewhere along the way. She loved days spent at the beach and time in nature, especially on the Bruce Peninsula.
But what made Marlene stand out more than anything was her smile. Always bright, always warm, always welcoming, her smile drew people to her, be they family, longtime friends, new acquaintances, or complete strangers; it brought joy and comfort to those around her, even in her final days.
Marlene’s family is profoundly grateful for the care she received at Grand River Cancer Centre and Innisfree House Hospice. Donations to these organizations in her memory are welcomed. They also extend their heartfelt thanks to all who visited, shared well wishes, and recalled joyful memories.
Memorial visitation will be held at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, 291 Huron Street, New Hamburg on Saturday, November 2, 2024, from 11:30 – 1:30 p.m. A Memorial service to celebrate her life will be held in the chapel of the funeral home at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Lousie Wideman Officiating. For those unable to attend the service in person a livestream link will be available.
