Obituary
Mom….. ❤
27-Feb-1932 to 21-Apr-2023
Our Mom, Olive Marjory McMillan (Crimp), passed away peacefully on Friday, April 21, 2023 at the beautiful age of 91. She was by far the best. A daughter, sister, wife, mother, auntie, grammie, cousin, and good friend to so many. She lived a full life filled with much happiness and, of corse, plenty of struggles too. The foundation of ‘her way’ was her decades long commitment within the United Church of Canada. She became involved in every aspect of life in Clarkson and Oakville, and always had an abundance of friends. She created a magnificent life for herself, her family, and her community. She welcomed everyone into her home and had a wholehearted passion for community engagement.
Mom was born in Calgary, relocated to Winnipeg with her family for a short time, and then on to Vancouver. She moved to Clarkson, Ontario at 14 and thought “her life was over” as she told her father. In Clarkson, she met and married the love of her life Don ‘Mick’ McMillan, had 6 children, 18 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and will soon welcome another great-grandchild in May!
Following the passing of our Dad in 2001, Mom lived on her own until she was 90 years old, loving her fierce independence and never wanting to burden. We had a fabulous 90th birthday celebration for her amidst the dreaded Covid pandemic, even while Omicron was raging. Many of you sent incredible messages of love via video. Truly spectacular!
Mom lived with enthusiasm, grace, and compassion every step of the way. The list is endless, so here goes: She was humble and kind, had a steel-trap memory, was a prolific knitter, learned how to play the piano, basked in the glory of cottage country, thoroughly enjoyed swimming, was a great water skier, enjoyed winter skiing, worshipped the sun and the outdoors, loved all sports (especially lacrosse), a traveler to see family and friends, an excellent cook, an extraordinary dessert maker, logical, organized, and an incredible party organizer, loved the theater and classical music, an advisor and mentor to many, had an endless thirst for knowledge and current events, and loved to tell a story, (albeit possibly with a touch too many details… )
Mom, you were:
An accomplished cook when we needed nourishment.
The gentle voice when we needed consoling.
The loving embrace when we needed comfort.
The trusted confidant when we needed advice.
The witty jokester when we needed levity.
The loving hostess when we needed celebration.
The firm parent when we needed discipline.
The proud mother and grandmother when we achieved our goals.
And our powerful guardian every single day.
Mom made many feel special each birthday and never missed sending you a card. She knew the joy of letter writing, and the power of a hand-written ‘thank you’ note.
She embraced technology to be in the lives of her widespread family. Text messages (especially to her grandchildren), emails, WhatsApp, Zoom calls, and FaceTime were all everyday events for her. She always wanted to remain connected as the family lived in Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Denver, Ottawa, Seattle, Chicago, Austin, Welland, Aurora, Oakville, Clarkson, and Toronto. When traveling home, Mom always had an exquisite dinner waiting for us when we arrived, along with a beautiful table setting that was prepared days in advance . Coming home was always special. ❤️
Mom: We will treasure our memories and share your capacity for basic goodness, good will, forgiveness, and kindness…. your legacy for all. We are planning a celebration of you and your life on June 23, 2023. It will be held at Walton United Church in Bronte at 1:00 pm. If required, additional details will follow. We first need to organize the family and welcome your new great-grandchild. …you know we are not as organized as you.
With forever love,
David, Jimmy and David, Donny and Rosie, Michael and Patti, Laura and Greg, Steven and Marion.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to:
· Ian Anderson House , the hospice that supported Mom and our family, or
· The Walton United Church in Bronte, where she thrived.
