Obituary For Marita Mayne
May 22, 1935 – October 7, 2023
It is with heavy hearts and much love that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Marita Mayne. She was a long time resident of the Grande Prairie area and will be lovingly remembered by her children: Darrell (Donna), Garry (Trudy), Randy (Diana), Candice (Casey) and Darcy (Natalie). As well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Marita was born in Strathclair Manitoba in 1935 to Vera (Newman) and Max Franks. She was the 4th child to join the family after Clayton, Maxine and Lloyd. Lenny and Glenda were to follow as well as step siblings Lawrence, Lyle and Shirley.
In 1940, after many years of drought, her family sold their farm and made the long trek (six weeks) by horse and wagon from Birtle Manitoba to Goodwin Alberta. Marita left home at the age of 15 to live with her grandparents and work at Joe’s Corner Café in Grande Prairie for 5 cents an hour.
She met and later married Ron Mayne in January of 1954 and had six children; Debbie, died shortly after birth, then came Darrell, Garry, Randy, Candice and Darcy.
Marita loved gardening, flowers, nature and was an amazing cook. She loved being a mom and taking care of her family, home and yard. Marita and Ron purchased the Shell Bulk Plant in Grande Prairie in 1974 and she worked there for many years.
Marita separated from Ron in 1979. She attended the Grande Prairie Regional College and received her Diploma in Office Administration. She took on important causes and new hobbies at this time.
She assisted in helping to establish Kroken House. It was later renamed Odyssey House. She worked as a volunteer at Odyssey House for many years as well as holding various positions on the Board and as President.
She joined the Council of Women and went to Ottawa to lobby for women’s rights. She and others were successful in having an outdated law changed so that married women in Canada were given protection (legally) from their husbands under the new law.
Later in life Marita struggled with health issues. She found comfort in the Lord, her family and nature. While we mourn her passing we are grateful that Mom is now at peace with the Lord.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, brothers; Clayton, Lloyd, Lyle and her first child, Debbie.
