Marion Swanston (nee Crawford) died peacefully at the age of 89, surrounded by love. Born in Peterborough to Donald and Pearl Crawford (nee Coward), Marion was lovingly raised by Sally Crawford (nee Leonard) from the age of five. She is predeceased by her husband Jim Swanston, brother, Douglas Crawford, and sister, Jean McLeod.
Marion was a wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt, friend, and teacher. She was a devoted wife and partner to Jim for more than 65 years, until they were separated by his death one year ago. She will be forever missed by her four daughters Anne (Wayne Ross), Jan (Robert van Velzen, deceased), Karen (Randy Sjolin), and Cathy (Roy Ramos), and her grandchildren: Gordon, Ian, Erika, Julia, Cassie, Sam, Luz, and Stephanie. She took great delight in the lives and interests of her grandchildren and was immensely proud of them. She particularly loved her visits with them, FaceTime chats, watching video recordings of their musical talents, seeing photos of their creations, travels, and animal adventures.
Marion had a natural curiosity and love of learning. She was passionate about teaching and special education, and was invested in hobbies that included gardening, knitting, music, travel, reading, antiques, genealogy, cross country skiing, golfing, canoeing, and her long-standing bridge club. She was devoted to service in the Anglican Church.
Marion was a woman who cared deeply about people –her husband and children, the children she worked with in schools, her extended family, her many lifelong friends, and those whose paths she crossed while pursuing her varied interests and volunteer work. She was delighted by the many new friendships she made after moving to Princess Gardens. She felt truly blessed and sought to fill all of our lives with connection and love.
Deeply and fiercely loved by her family and friends, Marion’s optimistic spirit, determination, and love of life will always be remembered. She will be truly missed.
Memorial visitation will be held at Ashburnham Funeral Home & Reception Centre, 840 Armour Rd., Peterborough, on Saturday, November 18, from 1:00 pm, with a service and celebration of her life following at 2:00 pm.
