Obituary
On March 18, 2023, Marion Quinn died as she would have wished – at home in Campbellford, in her own bed, after a brief illness. She was attended by her loving daughter Roxanne, who gave her a final good-night kiss, and her devoted son, Shawn, who cared for her unstintingly in her last years.
Marion died twelve days short of her eighty-fifth birthday. She and her husband, Jim, were married for fifty-two years. They loved and raised eight children: Roxanne, Deborah, Mark, Daniel, Terry, Angela, Shawn, and Scott. Marion grieved the loss of her husband in 2006, her oldest son and her grandson Bobby in 2012, and her youngest daughter in 2019.
She was born in nearby Madoc, the fourth of the five children of Greer and Bertha Yearwood. Marion and Jim were married in 1954. In the early years, she cared for her young children during the day, and in the evenings, she switched places with her barber husband, and helped provide for her family by working at a restaurant. She was known for her heroic work ethic.
Later, Marion bought and managed one of the most popular restaurants in town. Her cooking and baking were legendary, outstanding in quality and quantity. When the restaurant was sold after ten years, she cooked professionally at the Campbellford hospital. This was in the days when patients’ food was prepared on-site. She advanced there to become a well-respected food-service supervisor.
Her children miss her deeply. Her sons remember her as beautiful and caring. Her grandchildren recount many happy memories with her, and her gifts of elaborate birthday cakes. Marion had great affection for dogs, for horses, for Christmas, for her sons’ hockey games, for Angie’s softball prowess, for walking along the Trent River, and for her lifelong friendships. As well as being a masterful cook, she was an expert gardener, and knew everything ever known about preserving. What an abundant life! We her family are most grateful.
A time of prayer and memory will be held on Thursday, March 23, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Campbellford Legion, 34 Bridge Street West.
