It is with heavy hearts that we announce on November 12, 2024 Mario Gonzales Mendoza of Lethbridge, Alberta passed away suddenly in his home. He was born in Santa Maria, Bulacan, Philippines on December 8, 1954 moving with his family to Lethbridge in 1990.
He is survived by his children, Mark and Kaye; sister Penafrancia; brother Rodil; and his former wife Luisa with whom he had remained friends.
Mario was very devoted to his family, providing for them by working two positions as a housekeeper at St. Michaels Health Centre for 20 years and Chinook Regional Hospital for 32 years. He worked tirelessly to ensure his children had every opportunity in Canada by helping put them through university on their journeys to become an emergency room Registered Nurse and a Speech Language Pathologist. He was always eager to help with all the projects his family needed from installing sink facets and underground sprinklers to landscaping or dog sitting, to name a few. We have heard from dozens of people that they would see Mario’s face light up the most when he spoke about his children; his proudest achievements.
While Mario chose to stay in Canada to be close to his children, he was a proud Filipino who cherished visiting his homeland to spend time with his siblings and extended family. It was obvious when traveling with Mario that his heart stayed in the Philippines, he would always smile when speaking about traveling home or telling stories about his family living around the world. No matter how often he would see his siblings, nieces, nephews and extended family or how far away they lived from his adopted home in Canada, family is what gave him the most joy.
Mario was known as a fastidious, reliable and very hardworking man, fulfilling many duties that were integral to the functioning of the Chinook Regional Hospital. As the evening housekeeping supervisor, he went above and beyond his role, taking the utmost pride in his work while mentoring other employees through example and with kindness. His daughter would delight in hearing the innumerable kind words spoken about him from people of all disciplines in the hospital. There are not many places in Chinook Regional in which you find co-workers who have not been impacted by his presence.
In accordance with his wishes, Mario is to be cremated with his remains being laid to rest by family at a later date.
