Marina Haverkamp (née Funk) peacefully passed into the presence of the Lord on Friday, September 8, 2023, at 9:15 am, at Barnswallow Place in Elmira, ON.
Marina was born on February 26, 1937 in Herbert, Saskatchewan. She was born into a family of 11 children and grew up on a farm in Gouldtown, Sask. She graduated from Herbert Highschool and then attended Millar College of the Bible in Pambrun, Saskatchewan. She then attended the Child Evangelism Institute in Michigan, USA. From the time she was young, she always wanted to be a missionary, in fact, one day when she was 6 years old, her mother found her outside eating grass. When she was asked what she was doing, she answered that she was preparing to be a missionary in Africa and since people in Africa didn’t have much to eat, she was getting ready for that. She became a Child Evangelism director in South Western Saskatchewan and started Bible clubs in many small towns and taught women how to teach children the gospel.
Marina then met a tall wild Dutchman, Richard Haverkamp, and married him. They have three children, Rosa, Lily and Reenee, three granddaughters and six great-grandchildren. Marina and Richard both had a heart for missions, but instead of going to Africa, the Lord called them to Belgium in Europe, where they served for 38 years. The Lord blessed their ministry and together with a few coworkers 24 churches were started. In 2009 they returned to Canada, mainly due to health problems and have lived in Elmira, ON.
On December 23, 2015 Marina had surgery for colon cancer and shortly after that she was diagnosed with Alzheimers disease. Richard cared for her, but after seven years Richard had a burn-out and a place had to be found for Marina as he could no longer look after her. The health authorities were very helpful and a place was found at Barnswallow Place in Elmira where Marina moved to on November 8, 2022.
A funeral service will be held at Wallenstein Bible Chapel, 4522 Herrgott Road, Wallenstein, on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at 10:30 a.m., with a short visitation/viewing prior to that time. Everyone is invited to join the family for the burial in Hawkesville Cemetery following the service. After the burial, everyone is also invited to stay for a reception at Wallenstein Bible Chapel.
Donations to Christian Missions in Many Lands (CMML) in Marina’s memory would be appreciated, and may be made through the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira.
