Marie Madeleine Leonie «Maddie» (Van Tongelen)
Farquhar, 98, of Wolfville, NS passed away July 11th, 2024 in Berwick,
NS.
Marie Madeleine was born in Aartselaar, Belgium to Gustaaf
and Marie Van Tongelen on November 28th, 1925. She followed her
husband, Ben, to Canada following WW II where she continued to teach
herself the English language. Maddie attended Acadia University and
received a Master of Arts degree in French. She taught French at
Horton District High School, Acadia University and later to military
personnel and civil servants in Halifax. Maddie was an accomplished
seamstress and knitter. She was an avid reader, enjoyed solving
crossword puzzles, watching curling and her beloved Boston Red Sox.
Maddie played bridge with her lady friends for 35 years.
«Nanny» was our family matriarch and will be greatly missed
by all.
She is survived by daughters Jeanne Taylor of New Minas,
Susan (Carl) Demmons of Dartmouth, and son, Bruce (Gayle) of
Berwick.
Eight grandchildren Sean (Colette) Ennis of Kentville; Scott
(Sally) Ennis of Grand Pre; Erica (Sean) Easton of Wolfville; Jillian
(James) Demmons of Lunenburg and Mark (Heather) Demmons of Georgetown,
ON; Sarah (Kevin) MacKenzie of Grand Prairie, AB, James (Elise)
Farquhar of Lower Sackville, and Laura (Russell) Norrish, Fort St.
John, BC.
16 great-grandchildren Morgan (Brooke), Gavin, Hayden, and
Monica Ennis; Ethan and Kaitlyn Ennis; Luke and Drew Easton; Madeline
Beehan; James, Caris, Lucy and Joseph Demmons; Brianna Plaxton; Rylan
and Delaney Norrish.
Maddie was predeceased by husband Benjamin of Kentville,
sisters Julienne Flebus and Alice Fredericks both of Aartselaar,
Belgium; sisters-in-law Joan Hutchinson, Bridgetown and Shirley
Sawyer, Halifax; brother-in-law Don Farquhar, Windsor; son-in-law Tom
Taylor, Kentville and granddaughters Dr. Tracy (Demmons) vom Hagen,
Three Fathom Harbour and Lisa Ennis, Coldbrook.
There will be no visitation and a private burial will take
place at a later date. Donations in memory may be made to the VON
Annapolis Valley. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to
the VON staff and the Palliative Care Team for their visits and
wonderful support. Arrangements have been entrusted to the White
Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. Online
