Obituary
We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Marie (Maufort) Stubbert just 5 days shy of her 73rd birthday. She was a wife, a mom, a sister, a grandmother (her favorite title), and the best baker around.
Ma was never big on technology, but she figured it out enough to get online every morning to read the obituaries. So, Ma, here’s our attempt to write a «good one».
Ma was born and raised in Florence, and she stayed on Kempt Street to raise a family with Jackie, her husband of 51 years. Legend has it that they met while playing ball on Greenhill when she was 9 and he was 11, and the rest, as they say, is history. Together, they had 4 children: Michelle (Ronnie), Jacqueline (Jody), Jonathan (Andrea), and Gina (Mitchell). We have been told by many that she always spoke of us with great pride. Ten years ago, she was finally promoted to the title of «Nanny» when her only grandchild, Deegan, was born. To say he was the apple of her eye is a huge understatement. She absolutely adored him, even when he was tormenting her. She loved every minute of it.
Ma taught us all to be fiercely independent, to speak our minds, and to take care of each other and our community. She could turn her hand to anything: sewing everything from prom dresses for her girls to quilts for babies of friends and family, cooking a turkey dinner for 12 and making it look effortless, or fixing the rocker panels on the old “tank” then painting it with a roller. She was the one we called when we had car trouble or were cooking a roast for the first time. It’s safe to say that Ma would give you the shirt off her back, but if you crossed her, then she could hold a grudge like no other! You never had to wonder what she was thinking. She always said, «If it pops in my head, then it’s coming out of my mouth,» and anyone who knew her knew how much she loved to talk and that she didn’t have a filter! She always told it just like it was, whether you liked it or not.
Ma was always on the move. During the summer, she and Da enjoyed ripping around in their little convertible. She also enjoyed spending time in Margaree, quilting, baking, running the roads, and taking care of her family – someone had to keep us in line! For many years, she worked as a cleaner with the CBVRCE. She said she needed something to keep her busy. She and her SSS girls stayed connected after she retired from cleaning – getting together regularly to share a little laugh and a yearly girls’ weekend. She and her sister Peggy could often be found at various craft shows with their quilts and delicious cakes and squares. Although she never really felt the need to attend church, she was a member of Wilson United Church and the Wilson Weavers. She was usually in charge of setting up «the lunch» after special occasions at the church, and she could make a mean cup of tea even though she never drank it! She always preferred to stay behind the scenes, but her reach went far and wide and often went unnoticed – just as she preferred it. She and Dad volunteered with the Florence Fire Department for so many years that we lost count. This August, they were honored by having the department’s most recent fire truck named after them – The Jackie & Marie Stubbert. It was quite a surprise! She was also an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan and spent many years cursing at the TV and throwing her arms up in disgust. Maybe this is their year?
Besides her husband, children, and grandson, she is survived by her sister, Peggy (David) Scott, and her brother, George (Marlene) Maufort, in-laws: Joan and Keith Boutilier, Harris and Debbie Stubbert, Brent and Marlene Stubbert, Bryce and Lynn Stubbert, Ann Morris, many nieces and nephews and her «adopted kids» Sarah and Chris Campbell.
She is predeceased by her parents, George and Edna Maufort, her little buddy Taco, her in-laws, John C. and Margaret Stubbert, Bruce Stubbert, Ken Morris, Sonny and Rita Stubbert.
We would like to send special thanks to the dedicated staff of the Cape Breton Regional ICU, 4A, Palliative Care, and the Cancer Centre. Ma met some very dedicated members of the medical community who truly put their patients first.
Ma made the decision that she wanted to be cremated and she didn’t want a service or a wake (she always said she didn’t want people snotting and bawling over her). A private family service and burial will take place at a later date. She also wasn’t a fan of getting flowers, so, in lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Brookside Cemetery Fund through Carmen United or Palliative Care.
Ma always liked to stay connected with those she cared about, and she regularly checked in on them. She was never big on sentiments, and hugs weren’t her thing, but she always ended her conversations with, «Ah well, there she be. Be careful out there,» and that’s how you knew just how she felt. So, to honor Ma, pick up the phone and check in on someone who you haven’t chatted with in a bit. It just might make their day.
