Marianne Washburn Obituary
It is with deep sorrow that the family mourn the passing of Marianne Washburn on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 at the age of 92 with her daughters by her side.
Marianne was a truly wonderful person. Her caring nature and love for her family has left a lasting impact on all of those around her. She was a great hostess who loved to entertain, preparing large feasts, setting up card tournaments and games, and generally enjoying the visits with her guests. Her Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren will always remember her hugs and cuddles as well as her delicious cooking and baking. She was very family-oriented always keeping in touch with extended family. Many of her past students have commented on what a wonderful teacher she was to them and in some cases their children.
Marianne was born on January 23, 1932 to her parents, Mike and Ann Parasiuk on the family farm north of Stenen, Sk. She was the first born of five children. Her siblings were Thomas Parasiuk, Sylvia Gendreau, Mervin Parasiuk and Alfred Parasiuk. She was a wonderful big sister who helped her parents on the farm as well, she helped look after her siblings. Marianne attended the Gold Bank School throughout her Elementary school years. When it came time to attend high school, she moved to the Dormitory at the Sturgis Composite High to complete her education. Marianne then went on to attend the Normal School Teacher’s College in Saskatoon where she obtained her Teaching Certificate. She returned back to the Stenen area where she taught her first few years in one room school houses, living in the teacherages provided. She obtained a position at the Stenen Elementary school where she taught the rest of her career. Marianne was an Educator for 35 years, the last 10 years of her teaching career she also took on the role of Principal of the Stenen Elementary school. She always wanted to obtain her Education Diploma so for several summers she would attend the University of Saskatchewan and she achieved her goal. Her family was so proud of this accomplishment.
Marianne noticed a man named Robert Washburn at dances held at the Ormside, Crystal Lake and Stenen halls. Her wish was to have a dance or two with him. At one of the dances, Robert asked her to dance, they had lunch together at the dance and then he took her home. The romance began. They courted for a time and then were married on July 6, 1955. On March 31, 1956 Marianne and Robert were blessed with their first child, a daughter, Charlene Ann. On September 14, 1961 Marianne and Robert were blessed with their second child, a daughter, Brenda Lee. Marianne loved her daughters and was always so proud of them and their accomplishments. She was blessed to welcome 6 Grandchildren and 14 Great Grandchildren into her life.
Marianne mourned the loss of her first husband Robert who passed in July 1999. Marianne and Robert had a loving marriage of 44 years. She spent a lot of time with family and friends after Robert’s passing but life was lonely for her. She began to date Michael Kozmeniuk and in May 2004 they were married, sadly Michael passed away in September 2013.
Marianne moved to Yorkton in December of 2011 and lived there for just about ten years. In 2021, Marianne decided to move to Sherwood Park, AB. She was happy to live close to her oldest daughter, Charlene and her family. Marianne celebrated her 90th birthday, a beautiful celebration, with her daughters and their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and all who were able to attend. Sadly at the end of February, 2022 Marianne had several mini strokes which caused Vascular Dementia. She lived in the Jubilee Nursing home in Edmonton for a few months and then was transferred to the Sherwood Care Nursing home in Sherwood Park. This would be Marianne’s final home.
Marianne loved to travel. Over the years she travelled to England, Ireland, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Mexico, Cuba, Hawaii and various other states in the USA.
She was very active in the community becoming a member of several different groups over the years: Grace United Church Choir, Order of the Eastern Star, Stenen Housing Authority (Board member), Stenen Dew Drop In (President), Super Annuated Teachers Association member, she also joined Crib Clubs and Knitting/Crocheting clubs.
Marianne is pre-deceased by her parents, Mike and Ann Parasiuk, her brother, Thomas Parasiuk, her first husband, Robert Washburn, her second husband, Michael Kozmeniuk as well as numerous in-laws and family members.
