SEARS, Marianne Elaine – It is with great sadness that the family of Marianne Elaine (Perry) Sears announces her passing on Sunday, July 2, 2023, at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital after a three-year illness. Marianne was born on December 25, 1954, in Yarmouth to James and Ruth (Lyons) Perry. She was raised on Sherose Island, NS.
After graduating from Barrington Municipal High School (BMHS) in1973, she attended Acadia University, graduating with a BA in English and a BEd. During this time, she made lifelong friends with others in her class. After graduation, she began teaching at BMHS and taught until 2011. She loved her career and always felt she could not have chosen a better one. Marianne was very dedicated to her craft and to her students, thereby being a great role model. She was a conscientious teacher who made learning enjoyable for her students. Many former students have commented that she was their “favourite” teacher. She was interested in their lives and often lent her understanding ear.
In 1989 she met her future husband Greg, and they married on July 16, 1993. At that time, she became stepmom to wonderful sons, Patrick and Shawn, whom she loved unconditionally. Her grandchildren followed shortly thereafter, and she cherished every moment she spent with them. Marianne loved spending time with Greg – going for walks each day, relaxing at their cottage in Welchtown, camping in the last two years (often with friends Paula and Gerry), gardening, playing word games, watching movies, and travelling. Having family in Switzerland gave them opportunities to travel to Germany, Austria, France, Italy, Hungary, Croatia, and Slovenia. Other adventures were in the Canary Islands, Antigua, Bermuda, Alaska, Iceland, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Her first overseas trip involved her hitchhiking around England with a friend while she was in her 20s!
Marianne was fortunate to be surrounded by several loving, loyal, and compassionate friends, neighbours, and family, who supported her through her long illness. She cherished these relationships and made sure that she kept these connections alive. Her friends and family have described her as thoughtful, caring, compassionate, and very generous, always remembering birthdays and special times with impromptu gifts. She possessed an incredible sense of humour and infectious laugh. She was meticulous in every facet of her life – her appearance, her home, and her classroom.
Upon retirement, she became involved with the Barrington Curling Club, the Hillside Cemetery Committee, and the Shelburne County Learning Network Society.
Marianne was greatly loved and will be missed by her husband, Gregory Sears; stepson, Patrick (Simona) Sears with grandchildren, Amelie, Joseline, and Bastien from Switzerland; stepson, Shawn (Melissa) Sears with grandchildren, Liam and Kyndal from The Hawk, Cape Sable Island; sister, Rosalie (Steve) McMullin; niece, Nancy (Jason) Deering with grandnephew, Theo Deering; nephew, Kevin (Ashley) McMullin; mother-in-law, Joyce Sears; sister-in-law, Cheryl Ann (Stanley) Devine; brother-in-law, George Atwood (Karla); several nieces and nephews from the Sears family; several cousins; and many wonderful friends. She was predeceased by her parents, James and Ruth Perry; father-in-law, Wilbert Sears, and sister-in-law, Charlene (Sears) Atwood.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Kenny Yee, Dr. Mary-Margaret Keating, Dr. Sona Ebadi, nurses and staff of the hematology unit at the VG and also the VON, nurses at the cancer centre in Yarmouth and 3 East.
There will be a visitation held from 5-8 pm on Thursday, July 6, at the H. M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, Barrington, where the Memorial Service will follow on Friday, July 7, at 2 pm with Rev. Dr. Steve McMullin officiating. The service will be livestreamed for those unable to attend. Memorial donations in her name may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Hillside Cemetery, Brass Hill. Online condolences may be sent to huskilson@ns.aliantzinc.ca or you may sign the guest book at www.huskilson.net
