It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Dona Maria Luisa Gouveia on Sunday, September 8, 2024. Luisa is survived by her adoring children Julie DaSilva (Scott Hookey) and Tyler Whittet, granddaughter Madison DaSilva, siblings Joe Gouveia (Fatima), Norm Gouveia (Maria), Stella Ferreira (pre-deceased Delmar), Helena Formica (Pat), Grace Camara (Sergio), Alda Barnes (Mark), Sandra Camara (Lino), Nelson Gouveia (Ingrid), Edward Gouveia (Anka) and Elizabeth McIntosh (Brian), nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, bonus mom to Adam and Skylar Lawrence-Lebel and Vavó to Quinn and Finn. Predeceased by her loving sister, Mary Hitchcock (Tom) and parents Angelina and Luis Gouveia.
Luisa was born on the island of Santa Maria in the Azores of Portugal and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1967 where they settled in Cambridge, Ontario.
Luisa was always known as the wild one of her family, always living life her way. She enjoyed going out dancing, traveling, meeting new people, and was always the life of the party amongst family and friends, who she loved more than anything.
Anyone that knew Luisa knows she was always more than happy to help others in need. For many years Luisa was a foster mom, volunteered at many local senior facilities and every year donated to many social causes in her community.
In March of 2021, Luisa was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and despite being given 6 months to live, she remained strong and defied the odds against her battle for 3.5 years. In that time, she lived more life than most people do in their whole lifetime. Although she had cancer, cancer did not have her!
Luisa will be fondly remembered by family and friends for her bright and bubbly personality. For the way she was welcoming to anyone and everyone. For her strong and resilient will power. And more importantly, for all her catches of the day, and there were many of them.
There will be a memorial visitation at Corbett Funeral Home, 95 Dundas Street, Cambridge on Friday, September 20th from 5:00 to 8:00pm, followed by the rosary at 8:00pm.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Clements Catholic Church, 745 Duke Street, Cambridge on Saturday, September 21st at 11:00am with reception to follow.
In honour of Luisa we ask that you wear something pink to commemorate her life, as pink was her favorite colour.
