She will forever be remembered for her passion for life, deep love of her family and unsurpassed elegance, wit, and charm.
The strong matriarch that was Maria passed away peacefully on August 18, 2023 surrounded by the love of her life and husband of 65 years Mario; children Domenic, John (Angela), Lucia (William); grandchildren Mario (Samantha), Alessia (Stephen), Matteo; beloved nephew Gianfranco.
Maria was born to Pietro and Vincenza Ricco on October 29, 1935 in Ferrandina, Province of Matera, Italy. When she left Italy to come to Canada in 1955, she left behind her childhood sweetheart, Mario, a young and upcoming soccer athlete. Their love for each other continued to grow as evidenced by the beautiful love letters they continued to send eachother for over three years. Overwhelmed with enormous love, Mario abandoned his soccer career in 1958 and followed his Maria to Canada. From extremely modest and humble beginnings, Maria and Mario built a life together for over 65 years and became part of the generation of hard-working Italian immigrants that helped shape Canada. Maria was famously known for her ‘focaccia’, salumeria (including cured capicollo and salsiccia) and insanely delicious home-made pasta that could always feed an army. She ensured her home was always full of love, laughter, passionate conversations about soccer, politics and most of all family.
Visitation will be held at Bernardo Funeral Home (2960 Dufferin Street, south of Lawrence Avenue W.) on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm & 6:00 to 9:00 pm.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Nicholas of Bari Church (1277 St. Clair Avenue West, west of Dufferin Street) on Wednesday, August 23, at 10:00 am.
Entombment to follow at Highland Memory Gardens (33 Memory Gardens Lane, south of Steeles Avenue E.).
