Our mom and Oma, Leidie Jonker, left us suddenly but peacefully on May 7, 2024 after a brief illness.
Born in Enschede, Holland, Mom and her family immigrated to Canada in 1957 and settled in Winnipeg. Mom and Dad married in 1970 and started a large and rowdy family in Springfield MB where she settled into being our stay at home mom. After their own six kids had all started school, our parents felt the house was too quiet and decided to pour their love into fostering children. As a result of this, we had the joy of keeping one of those children to call our own. This size of family required a large supper table, so Dad and Uncle Wayne custom built an indestructible round table that was 6′ across, so that there was always room for our friends to join as well. Since there were usually 10-14 people for supper, cooking was a big part of life, and Mom made all of our meals from scratch, including chickens that we raised ourselves, beans from the garden, and endless potatoes that she peeled at an impressive speed. For a while we even had a dairy cow, since buying six gallons at a time at the store was getting embarrassing. Weeding our massive garden was our summer job, and Mom did her best to never set foot in the garden unless it was to look after her flower beds. She made up for it by canning, freezing, and preserving all of the food so that we could have canned beans every. Single. Day.
Our mom had a wide creative streak and did almost every possible art and craft that existed. She dabbled in macrame, silk flower making, Tri-Chem, pottery, and sewing – she sewed all of our clothes in the 70s but luckily for us didn’t have time for that once the little kids came along. After that she pored over the Mary Maxim catalogs to find knitting kits to make us all sweaters and mittens instead, which we treasured. Once we were a little older, Mom followed her dream and opened a ceramic studio called Little Cottage Crafts in the city. Aside from her children, this was her greatest joy. Dad helped her build this dream, and we all have great memories of hanging out and helping out at «the shop». Closing that chapter didn’t slow down her creative passion. She moved on to other pursuits, including quilting, acrylic painting, pen and ink drawing, scrapbooking, and most recently art journaling.
Mom’s other passion was renovating. When we were growing up, the wall in the kitchen was built, torn down, and rebuilt more times than we can remember. The living room was painted, wallpapered, sponged, and re-painted over and over again. One time she even painted the hallway to look like castle walls. The furniture was never where you remembered it being, which made it difficult for us to come home drunk as teenagers and get away with it. The kitchen was remodeled multiple times to keep up with the «changing needs of the family» (ahem, changing moods of the owner). Dad would come home from work and find a wall partially torn down, or the island in the kitchen gone, and would find out what his next project was going to be. He was always game and polished his handyman skills, taking on electrical, plumbing, cabinet hanging, flooring, and anything else Mom decided needing changing.
Once she had an empty nest, Mom kept up with her art, but also was able to enjoy time spent on the deck, drinking coffee and enjoying the breeze. She loved to spend hours out there, and this is where our family gathered for every visit and occasion. When you drove in, chances were she would be sitting out there reading or doing puzzles on her iPad. For the last few years, her dog Taco has been her constant little companion, following her everywhere.
Mom was predeceased by her husband Neil, grandson Christian, her parents, sister Cathy, and brother Hank. She leaves to mourn her children Shelley (Mike), Dave (Liz), John (Tammy), Neil, Kristy (Cam), Paul (Lisa) and Holly, as well as a dozen grandchildren who will miss her very much. She also leaves a sister, Lena (Wayne), sisters-in-law Rae, Toni, Anne and Cec, brothers-in-law Harry (Ann) and Peter (Mary), and a horde of nieces and nephews. And as Mom would have said, «Mm-hm, yep, yep, uh-huh, yes, yeah, mm-hm. (Sigh.) Yep.»
A Celebration of Life will be held at Seasons Funeral Service at 576 Balsam Crescent in Oakbank, MB, on Friday May 17, 2024 at 11am.
