Obituary
Maria Hrycajkiw passed away peacefully just over 3 months past her 100th birthday on December 26, 2023 at home, surrounded by her loving family. Beloved wife of the late Dometeusz. Cherished mother of Jerry (Helen) and Stephen (Irena). Beloved grandmother of Andrew (Lisa), Natalia (Matt), Christina (Arthur) and Peter. Cherished great-grandmother to Sophia, Ana, Sasha, Milena and Danilo. She will be lovingly remembered by many relatives and friends all around the world.
September 6, 1923 Maria Kudlak was born in the small village of Dibca, near the city of Jaroslaw now part of Poland. As a teenager she was taken by Germans to serve as slave labour. In late 1945 she married Dometeusz and shortly thereafter she bore her first son Jaroslaw. After the war the three of them moved to Mons Belgium, where her husband worked the coal mines. With the help of UNRWA in May of 1951 they immigrated to Montreal. September 1953 Maria bore her second son Stephen. During her time in Montreal Maria was very active with the Ukrainian Youth Association (CYM). During the summers she volunteered at the Werchowyna camp and during the year she volunteered her evenings to make varenyky and other dishes to help raise funds for CYM. Maria was an active member of the Marion Society at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin church in Rosemount where she recited the Rosary weekly before Sunday liturgy.
January 1993 her husband passed away and Maria had to learn a whole new list of tasks. She never had a drivers license so either walked everywhere or took public transit. She had to manage all the finances as well as maintain a duplex, as both her sons had moved away many years prior to Toronto. In 2016 Maria broke her hip and moved to the Ukrainian Residence independent living. After Covid her health started to wane and so her sons decided in December 2021 to move her to Richmond Hill. She lived with each son for intervals of six months. During those 2 years she enjoyed being with all her children, grand children and great grandchildren. She constantly kept asking why is she living so long and Pastor Fr. Ostap said that now her new mission in life is to pray for her family and all in need.
Now it is time we pray for her soul. Vichnaya Pamyat.
