Obituary
Passed away at the Minnedosa Health Centre on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at the age of 72 years, Maria Ellen Berry, of Minnedosa, MB formerly of Cypress River, MB.
Maria leaves to mourn her loving husband Joe, daughters Sara and husband Kevin Farough of Neepawa, MB and Melissa Lelond of Minnedosa, MB, step daughter Sabrina Berry of Sprucewoods, MB, grandchildren Graydee, Will, and Olivia, sister Liisa & husband Mike Gatenby, and niece Laura, sister-in-Law Barb Bloomfield, niece and nephew Wendy and Cory Bloomfield, as well as extended family & friends.
Maria was predeceased by her parents Eino & Terttu “Gertie” (nee Kinunen) Peltola and in-laws Percy & Alma (nee Jones) Berry.
Maria was born and raised in Vancouver, BC. She held several interesting jobs, one being a secretary for a Warden in a penitentiary in BC. She moved to Manitoba in the early 80’s and took a job as a cook in a small café in the town of Baldur. She then worked as a clerk in a grocery store before moving onto her next job at the local newspaper that became her lifelong career. She worked for many years as a reporter for the Baldur/Glenboro Gazette and had a weekly column known as Maria’s Musings. It was in Baldur that she met her husband Joe at a local baseball tournament. They then settled in the beautiful little town of Cypress River and started a family.
Maria was a happy, intelligent, friendly, independent person who danced to the beat of her own drum. She loved her family fiercely. The mama bear came out in her if they were in need of help. Worrying was a waste of time unless it was her family or friends. Maria loved music, watching sports, travelling and meeting new people. She has travelled to all different parts of the world; backpacked in Europe with her sister Liisa, went to North Africa, travelled all across Canada, the U.S and Mexico as well as many cruises. To her there was nothing better than curling up with a good book on a chair in front of the ocean and listening to the waves and feeling the warm breeze on her face.
A Celebration of Maria’s life will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. in the Cypress River United Church, Cypress River, MB. Following the service, a private family Internment will take place and then a reception will be held in the Cypress River Community Hall. Everyone is welcome.
