It is with profound sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Maria da Conceição Orfão Dias at Grace Hospital on December 18, 2024, at the age of 85.
Maria was predeceased by her beloved husband, António; her sister, Idalina; her niece, Judite; her mother, Gertrudes da Conceição; and her father Manuel Joaquim Orfão.
Left to cherish her memory are her sons Manuel and António (Kristin); daughters Belina and Lisette (John); her cherished grandchildren Christian and Ella; her sister Relinda; her nephew Baldwin; and her extended family, including cousins in Portugal.
Maria was born in Vale da Serra, Portugal, and immigrated to Canada in 1970 with her husband and children in search of a better life. Her journey was marked by strength, resilience, and an unwavering dedication to her family.
Maria’s life was one of family, friends, and faith. She was a loving and devoted mother to her children, a cherished wife to her husband António, and an adoring grandmother to her beloved grandchildren, who brought her endless joy. Maria deeply valued her relationships with friends and family, both in Winnipeg and Portugal, and she was profoundly grateful for their love and support over the years.
Through life’s challenges, Maria remained steadfast in her faith, which was a source of strength and guidance for her. She was devoted to teaching her children and sharing her values, stories, and passions.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all the staff at Tuxedo Villa for their compassionate care during Maria’s time there, and to the healthcare professionals at Grace Hospital for their support and kindness in her final days.
Maria will be deeply missed by family and friends in Winnipeg and Portugal.
The viewing will take place 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sunday, December 29, 2024 at Bardal Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook St., with prayers and eulogy beginning at 6:30 p.m.
A Roman Catholic Mass and Christian burial will be celebrated 12:00 p.m. Monday, December 30, 2024 at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 181 Austin St. N.
Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue West, where she will be laid to rest close to her husband, sister, and niece.
Following the burial, refreshments will be served at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue at the back of the cemetery to celebrate Maria’s life and share memories together. All are welcome to join the family.
