The family of
«Margie» Marguerite Evelyn
Kempt regrets to inform you that the matriarch and an
all powerful force within their family has slipped quietly away on
Thursday June 8, 2023 at East Cumberland Lodge in Pugwash,
NS.
East Cumberland Lodge has been
«Margie’s» loving home away from her Springhill home for
over 3 years.
Marguerite Evelyn Kempt was the daughter
of William Owen Cliffe and Annie Mabel Phinney and was the wife of
Gorley Kempt for 26 years until his sudden passing on August 3,
1967.
Marguerite was born March 3, 1925 in All
Saint’s Hospital Springhill, NS. This was the same hospital where she
later began working in the administrative office and where she spent
by far the greater part of her varied working career when employed
outside of her always immaculately kept home. «Margie» was a
vibrant force in several other career activities, but it was her
additional work with the Royal Canadian Army (Militia and Special
Reserve) that she most enjoyed and to which she was most
dedicated.
Margie was an avid fan of Nova Scotia’s
Fundy Shore, and particularly of the Five lslands area, where she
proudly swam every day from May through October until she was well
into her 80s. Although a «dyed in the wool Springhiller»,
she was perhaps most content when at the cottage in Five lslands.
Literally hundreds of otherwise strangers will remember her as
«the fish monger for Five lslands flounder.» During the
winter months, everyone knew they could find Margie (and her music) at
the rink. ln fact, it wasn’t uncommon for people to come to watch her
powerfully and gracefully glide across the ice. Music was very
important to her, and she’d happily swap skates for dancing shoes at a
dance hall, party, wedding, or in anyone’s kitchen.
Margie was the last surviving member of
a large tripartite family, as both of her parents had lost previous
spouses before starting another family together. As «the last and
cutest baby» of all three families she was thoroughly spoiled by
them all and consequently had warm feelings for all of her siblings.
She never lost contact with her much older Cliffe half brothers,
(William, Joe, Tom, and Jim) nor her half sister Jennie (Cliffe)
Randall. Her half brother and sister on her mother’s side George
(«Geordie») Selkirk and Nellie (Selkirk) Moore were closer
in age and in geographical distances. As a result they were as
vibrantly a part of her life as were her parentally inclusive
siblings, John, Josephine (Melanson), Owen, and Willena
(«Billie» Boran).
Margie is survived by her son William G.
Kempt (Beverly Kendall) of Pugwash, NS and her daughter Betty Ellen
Kempt (Daniel Hiltz) of Hammond’s Plains, NS. She is also survived by
four grandchildren: Erica Hiltz (Laine Green), Kelley Hiltz (Jamie
Cameron), Maylia Kempt (Jeff Parker) and Erin Kempt (Michael
Sutherland) as well as by her five great grandchildren, Ella and
Mattias Parker, Benjamin and Lila Sutherland and Henry
Green.
Our family will be forever grateful for
the love and care extended to Margie by the entire staff of the East
Cumberland Lodge and by its many volunteers and affiliates. Many went
well beyond normal levels of generosity and benevolence. Those who had
a «special» relationship with Margie will know who they are.
We would also be remiss if we were to overlook the excellent care
provided by the myriad of professional care providers during her brief
stays in the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre. Nor will we ever
forget the friendship, attention and care offered by her wonderful
neighbours, old friends, fellow Springhillers and the Cumberland
VON.
Arrangements are under the care and
direction of A H Brown Funeral Home, 5
McFarlane Street, Springhill, (902 597 2361).
Honouring Margie’s wishes, cremation has taken
place.
A Celebration of Margie’s life will be held at 2 PM on
Sunday, July 16, 2023 from the A. H. Brown Funeral Home,
Springhill. All
are welcome to attend. A
reception will follow.
Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Springhill at a
later date.
Donations in memory of Margie may be
made to the East Cumberland Lodge or a charity of one’s
choice.
Sharing of memories and condolences may
be sent to the family by visiting Margie’s online memorial at
