It is with great sadness that we, the family announce the peaceful passing of Stanley ‘Stan’ Margettie, at home on Saturday, December 23, 2024, after a lengthy illness, surrounded by family and friends.
Born in Sydney on April 26, 1929, Stan was the son of the late Parmay and Mary Margettie.
Stan is survived by his wife, Marie; sister, Gloria, Mississauga, ON; brother Eddie, Hamilton, ON; daughters, Phyllis, Sandra, Debbie (Mike), Peggy and Carol (Joe); sons, Robert, Louie (Linda) and Darren; sisters-in-law, Ann and Muriel and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Stan was predeceased by his sister, Phyllis and brother, Louie. He is also predeceased by his brothers-in-law, Albert, Frankie, David and Lefty.
Stan served for his country with the Royal Canadian Dragoons Armored Division at various bases. Upon his return to civilian life Stan worked with the City of Sydney water commission for 30 plus years where he retired as a supervisor. In his younger days he was an avid boxer and well-skilled in the art of pugilism, often winning many matches. Stan was an avid sport fan rooting for his favorite Toronto teams, the Blue Jays, Maple Leafs and Raptors. Stan also enjoyed watching grandson, Darien as he plays for the Saint John Seadogs of the QMJHL
Stan was a selfless person who always put his family and friends first, often looking forward to his annual family barbecue and lobster dinner on Father’s Day as he enjoyed the company of his family and friends. Stan was also a lifelong learner who was a self-taught in the use of the computer and would often be in his office surfing the “net” emailing family and friends far and wide and doing his shopping on Amazon.
We would like to acknowledge the staff of the VON and City Homemakers, especially Ms. Helen Sweeney. Thank you for your amazing care, compassion and dedication you have shown the family in our time of need. To Dr. Abboud, Dr. Giorno, Dr. Ritter and Dr. D’intino and all the amazing staff of An Cala Palliative Care Unit we cannot thank you enough for the care and kindness that you showed Stan while he was there.
Visitation for the late Stanley Margettie will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) from 5 to 8 p.m.on Sunday, December 29, 2024. Memorial service for the late Stanley Margettie will be held in the funeral home in the All Faith Chapel on Monday, December 30, 2024, at 11 a.m. with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Interment will follow at the Pier Funeral Home, All Faith Memorial Garden.
