Margaret’s Obituary
Margaret Irene Sorensen (Canning), long time resident of Dixonville (Alberta,) passed away in her home on June 26th, 2024 at the age of 81 years old. Margie was born to Blanche(Fawcett) and Judson Canning in Battle River (Alberta). She grew up in Dixonville and the Smith Mills area. Her father Judson died suddenly when Margie was just an infant. Her mother, Blanche later remarried Harry Beebe. Harry and Blanche and Margie lived and worked at the Smith Saw Mills. Her brothers, Gordy, Clifford, Howie and Harold were quite a bit older than her and were working in different jobs and on their own by then.
Margie went to college in Grande Prairie for 2 years taking office administration. She worked for Peace River Forestry for a few years, and primarily worked for the Peace River School Division (30 yrs), first as a secretary and later as a teacher’s assistant. She loved working with children. She was also a big supporter of her community. She enjoyed the Dixonville Store, the craft club, the school library and the Life Club events. Margie volunteered in many areas of the community including the museum and the Seniors Center. Margie was very devout in her belief in God and she was a long standing member of the Strang Presbyterian Church.
Margie married James Arne Sorensen (Jim) on July 9th 1965. They had 3 beautiful children which they raised on the farm. Aaron was the artist/musician/entrepreneur, Ada a social worker and mother, Nathan farmer/welder/oilfield business. Margie and Jim eventually had 10 grandchildren, plus 5 adopted grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. Margie loved her family and all the children deeply.
She is predeceased by: Husband James Sorensen; her siblings and their spouses Gordon and Doris Canning, Clifford and Peggy Canning, Howie and Janice Canning (and their son Timothy Canning,) Harold and Irene Canning. She also recently lost her cousins Russ and Georgette Fawcett as well as Linda Fawcett, and granddaughter Charly Sorensen.
She is survived by her children and their spouses: Aaron & Sun Sorensen and their children Alexander, Maxwell and Amelia; Ada and Mike Dollevoet, their child Lexis Horvath and husband Jonas and their children Hudson and Hayden Horvath; Nathan and Jenny Sorensen, their children Cole and Fiance Mckenna Patterson, Riley, Reece and Taylor Sorensen. She also left behind many friends and community members who she loved, but not many “old Timers” as mom stated.
Donations may be made to Strang Presbyterian Church or the Central Grove Cemetery.
