Margaret Ruth «Marg» (Nason) Fraser
1939-2024
Margaret Fraser, known
to most as Marg, was born Middleton in 1939 and spent her early years
in Lawrencetown, Halifax and then Dartmouth. Daughter to Harold and
Ruth Nason (nee Orchard), and sister to Harold, Lawrence and Richard
Nason, she was known as a spirited young lady and often found herself
in «hot soup» growing up. She carried that sense of
fun throughout her entire life and encouraged levity in all those
around her.
Marg graduated
Dartmouth High School in 1955. She completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree
at Acadia University in 1957 and went on to study occupational therapy
at McGill University where she graduated in 1960. She completed her
professional internship in Vancouver and Toronto and regaled us with
many «hot soup» stories from that time in her
life.
Marg had a very
accomplished career as an occupational therapist, working in
increasingly responsible roles at the Victoria General (where she met
Bob, her husband of 55 years) and the Nova Scotia hospitals. She was
an active leader in the Canadian and Nova Scotia Associations of
Occupational Therapists and invested considerable time and energy in
professional development programs, ensuring her skills were at the top
of her field. She was awarded the Mary Black Award for her
professional accomplishments and contributions to her field. One of
her proudest accomplishments was developing an interdisciplinary team
with Bob, on his oncology unit at the VG – the first of its kind in
Canada.
Marg and Bob married
in 1961 and quickly started a family of four children – Stephanie,
Wendi, Peter and Nancy (deceased). The gang travelled to Houston,
Texas in 1969 to further Bob’s professional accreditations,
and Margie managed it all. She was the consummate planner, organizer,
mediator, mother and wife.
After her family grew
families of their own, Marg and Bob enjoyed travel and their lovely
cottage on Tupper Lake. Marg loved to spend hours baking, gardening,
and making beautiful handcrafts which became coveted gifts for many.
But her greatest enjoyment came from her seven grandchildren – Wendi
and Allan’s sons, Matthew and Daniel Bacon; and Peter and
Paula’s children, Austin, Alexandra, Cooper, Mollie and
Landon Fraser. She loved to spoil them and chuckled when they found
themselves in «hot soup» – chips off the old
block.
Marg passed away
peacefully, and on her own terms, on August 2nd, after animated
telephone conversations with all seven grandchildren, and with Wendi
and Peter at her side.
Marg was predeceased
by Bob, who passed away in February 2022. It was their wish to be
remembered as a couple, having spent 55 years happily married. A
reception to celebrate Marg and Bob’s lives well lived, will
be held on Friday, August 9th at 1:30 p.m. in the White Family Funeral
Home, Kentville. In lieu of flowers, any remembrances can be made to a
charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to
the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services,
Kentville.
