It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Madonna Whalen, age 91, our beautiful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt the beloved matriarch of our family, on Thursday February 16, 2023 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney surrounded by her loving family.
Born in North Sydney on March 25, 1931, Mom was the daughter of the late Leo and Euphemia (Robinson) Phalen. She was a life-long resident of North Sydney. Before devoting her life to her family, she worked at Maritime Tel and Tel as a switchboard operator. She also spent many years volunteering for the Parish Center Ladies Auxiliary, Northside General Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and 562 Cabot Squadron Air Cadet Parent Group. She was a faithful member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney.
Family was most important to Mom and the immense love she had for her family was evident in the close relationships she had with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and everyone that came through her door. She always welcomed everyone with open arms and treated them like family. She was the happiest when her home was filled with love and laughter which often lead to family shenanigans with her being the center of attraction.
She is survived by her children Maureen Guy, Richard Whalen (Grace), Vera (Keith) Ruttle, Ann Whalen, Shaun Whalen, Denise Whalen (Eddie); grandchildren Kathleen (Dave) Williams, Erinn Guy (Mitchell), Gillian Whalen (Mike), Brent (Melissa) and Bryan (Alexandra) Whalen, Adam and Mark (Kim)Whalen, Hughie (Leeann), Dennis and Michael (Kathy) MacIntosh, Jonathan Keigan (Christin), Kailin (Cyril) MacDonald and Brianna Murphy (Nick); her 20 cherished great-grandchildren lovingly known to them as “Nanny Nanny”. She is also survived by her daughter in-law Ann Whalen, her sisters Leona Jardine, Jean Walker and Monica Phalen and brother-in-law Joseph (Genevieve) Whalen, many nieces and nephews and her furbaby Taz.
Besides her parents, Mom was pre-deceased by the love of her life, husband Kevin, son Kevin “KO”, son’s-in-law Everett MacIntosh and Clayton “Bud” Guy; sisters Marie O’Neil, Julia Simpson and Eileen Forrest, as well as brothers Albert and Tommy Phalen.
Visitation for Madonna will be held from 6-9 pm, Monday, February 20 at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney with Rev. Doug MacDonald officiating. Burial will follow at a later date at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph Church Improvement Fund, Bereaved Families of Cape Breton, Society for Treatment of Autism (NS) or a charity of choice.
